Ok, so I read the whole trhead and Im still not clear... do any of these run off propane? And if so, effectively? Would I need to put it outside to vent it when running propane? _________________ 77 Westfalia + 2 dogs = good life. |

I don't think I have ever seen a portable fridge run on propane. I replaced my stock fridge with a t-49 truck fridge and I am very happy with it. _________________ 87 westy 2wd (NED) |

In this thread, no; they are all AC/DC-powered.
Doing a Google search, here is one 3-way portable fridge (LP/AC/DC): https://bensdiscountsupply.com/unique-portable-3-w...t-ugp-55l/ . Uses a 20 lbs. propane tank. Whether you consider a BBQ tank + fridge "portable" is up to you. According to reviews, these types of fridges don't work well in high altitude with the stock propane regulators, nor in hot weather. _________________ ~Kamz

Haha the Dometic in the first link above does NOT have wifi!!
I'm going to have to invest in a fridge soon. I'm on the fence of replacing the old dometic and keeping the stock door.
Then the other part of me wants to buy the weatherproof ARB portable fridge. The advantages to this model is the height - and maybe be able to use it as a seat. Also, I can always have both fridges. For longer trips with more people. _________________ Brandon

Thank you! I *hate* one way can't return them $$$ decisions....
I have no need for wifi while camping, though must admit I enjoy it on occasion when a friend has it and we're away for awhile, so I can check in with my DH. I *think* with my new phone plan though, I'll be able to just text him....
At any rate, no need for my fridge, solar panel, or any of my other *camping* things to have wifi, now Blue Tooth message sent to my phone, to tell me the solar isn't working, or my fridge is too warm, that would be cool and useful.
At least I have it down to two fridge, Dometic or ARB. I thought ARB was going to do a dual zone one last year, swore I read something about it, then....nothing!

FWIW...the wifi feature on the Dometic models "CFX-##W" uses a smartphone app
to control -and- indicate operating temperature in the fridge...useful, I'd guess...

If I were buying today I'd get the two compartment fridge/freeze units.
I purchased a larger Truck Fridge and a smaller Dometic console unit to use as a freezer.

I've stood and sat on my ARB50 for several years now. No issues whatsoever.
I can't honestly fathom why anyone would want a two compartment fridge/freeze unit unless they seriously had a thing for popsicles and/or ice cream. 99% of the food we eat when camping needs a fridge not a freezer.

Slap me if I already said this.
The cooler style is more efficient because you do not spill the cold air out every time you open the door like an upright. If one of the goals is saving electricity then the cooler style is the way to go. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Ditto (edit: and I use it as a seat all the time). And I don't recall the ARB's instructions saying "don't sit/stand on it". _________________ ~Kamz

It's the kids fault ThankYouJerry, they want popsicles, and after I swear (in m head) at the a$$hole in the big rig RV with a proper fridge that sends his kids out eating popsicles/ice cream, and I tell my kids, "nope, sorry, no freezer here". I think in my head, OMG, I want a popsicle/ice cream...Then, somehow we wind up at the office/store, and I'm buying everyone a $5 frozen treat...Even at $15/week/ few months of hot summer weather, that's $100 PLUS the cost $5/day for ice...$400/two months. Then, I say, "I'm buying myself a fridge with a freezer this year". I've been saying it for a few years now...
Wouldn't have occurred to me NOT to stand on it. I've been standing on my cheap add ice one for years...Now I'm wondering what the weight limit on the ARB and/or Dometic is.
AND, what happened to the ARB fridge/freezer combo I read/saw/heard about last year...because the lid on that Dometic doesn't look like it locks!? OR as sturdy as the ARB one.

Alright you guys have me sold on the freezer. I can't wait to give out ice cream to my friends at the brewery!
ARB coming out with a dual zone? Dang I hope its soon.
Edit: Nah, I don't think I would need a dual zone. It messes with my game plan.
So, you can have ice cream with the truck-fridge (not portable unit) right? Here's my game plan.
1. Buy portable unit - single zone.
2. Eventually replace the stock Westy Dometic
3. Use portable unit when needed in the Westy.
4. Use portable unit as extra fridge while camping in my dad's ToyHauler camper
The ARB Elements Weatherproof 63 Quart has some really cool features - such as a programmable electronic 4-digit pin lock. _________________ Brandon

Not my pic but I have the same exact setup in my Westy. Love this Fridge/Freezer and all that it can do.
The frozen food aspect is great, prepare some dishes at home and then freeze them and take them with you.
I thought that the Ice Cream thing would be cool too, turns out the Freezer has to be set super low to freeze Ice Cream.
That means the freezer (half) seems to cycle more often than the fridge and can take a toll on your battery. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

"No mummy bags". They probably cause the fridge to get too warm if placed on top of it. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

The booklet that came with my ARB actually suggests using it as a seat.
My ARB will easily freeze anything put at the bottom while keeping 'fridge' cold stuff put on top in the upper area. It's almost like 'dry ice' cold down there sometimes if not careful.
It can be a little tricky to set the temp correctly for this to happen and not, for example, freeze the beer or soda cans too |
