i was looking for the 1.9 bolts to replace the org 2.1 stretch type bolts, but doing a search turns up very little to buy??? i thought van cafe, gowesty, bus depot would have them, but they wont show up in there search window. are they hard to come by??? price is everything at this point and i am way over budget.

If thesambamasters give the OK, I can dissect one of my three extra 1.9s and extract a set for you. Are used rod bolts OK to re-use?

Good point and how do you tell the 1,9 from the 2,1 bolts?

There is a very detailed thread re: 2.1 "stretch bolts" vs. the 1.9 "non-stretch" bolts.

Tell the difference? my money's on, if it's a 1.9L engine then it's 1.9 bolts, that sort of thing.

i'm thinking you can reuse the 1.9 but not the 2.1 due to them being the stretch type, and its best to use new nuts.

Google "Northwest Connecting Rod".

They are a VW engine remanufacturer up here. Give them a call and they would be able to tell you for sure whether you can or can't.

I've always re-used the 1.9 bolts, checked threads to see if any indication of being over torqued. Ran one driver 12yrs and had 330+ mi, treat same as type 1's.

The only rod bolts you can't reuse are stretch bolts. 1.9L rod bolts are not stretch bolts, sooooo...

Even with the 1.9 bolts the big ends will have to be shaved cap & beam and re-sized with new pin bushings. I have rebuilt rods sets on the samba. Rocky
