|
|
I was nosing around to see where these Van Cafe flip open cup holders will fit. Some places will also create a problem. Such as the excellent location on the inboard face of the seat base where your hand will naturally fall. Unfortunately one day you'll squeeze past and kick a hot latte all over the floor. Or forget to close it, and crunch it walking past. Doors seem nice until you close one with a full hot coffee in the holder.
So lots of foibles here. Where have some put theirs and regarded it a success?

PO installed them on the panel behind the shifter; they were brown. I replaced them with blue ones and put spacers behind them.
I never use them anymore (laundry list of reasons as to why) and will be removing them altogether in the near future.
They're handy, but not to my liking. _________________ ~Kamz

I spent more time thinking about where to put my cupholders than whether to put a ring on my wife's finger.
I bought cupholders four years ago. They are still in my box(es) of van parts. _________________ 87 Westy, 250k GW 2.4 - 2.0 , 16" wheels |

I have the exact same set up as shown in Kamzcab's photo, albiet black holders and a different way of leveling them. I like it because they're out of the way and unlike the top of dash set-ups no one can see your beverage of choice from outside the van.
Only drawback is that cold drinks get warm if the heater is on. Of course, our Jetta does the same darn thing due to the factory cup holders being in front of the heat vents.
That said, there have been a lot of threads on this. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

I like mounting them on the exterior of the rig in case of beverage spillage
As Mario said .. inside base of the passenger seat. When not used, fold up. Otherwise ... watch yer step. I have two mounted there in two rigs.
In my sinka ... two plastic articulating marine beverage holders on either side of the shifter just above the front dash heating duct cover. And they are removable plus if you off-road they'll keep the beverage verticle |

Upside down, horizontally, on top of the dashboard. Mounting plan devised by a 12 year old girl, works very well. The kid is also useful for figuring out how electronic stuff works. |

To those with the west marine folding cup holders like in kamzcab's photo, how did you attach the things? I know they come with 4 screws apiece, but in the central lower dash position, have you guys just drilled into the plastic? Is this load bearing? My coffee cup is porcelain or a pint mason jar-can that 23 yr old brittle plastic hold?
To those of you who mounted the cup holders on the pass-thru on the passenger seat facing the driver, do you drill into the body to secure them here? Wouldn't that create potential for rust and/or water entering the cab?
Also, where has anyone mounted them in the back of your camper?
Thanks for your replies! |

I did the same, but for others, just beware that the screw will actually go right through the sheet metal into the wheel well, so you need to spray some undercoteing on the threads outside the van, otherwise rust will become an issue.
I didnt realise this until I was in the wheel well while dropping the fuel tank. I noticed a random screw tip coming out of the sidewall in the wheel well.
At the time of mounting the cup holders, I thought it was screwing into an open area under the seat, inside the van. I guess it depends how far forward you mount them... _________________ 1989 Vanagon GL Westfalia - 2.1L waterboxer |

I realize it's not exactly what you asked, but as a major coffee fiend I went with one of fairweather's beautiful wooden dash organizers.
I can't speak highly enough of it—it's like it's meant to be there, and I'm not sure how I'd live without it when we're using the van... it's one of those things that's immediately ultra-useful and unobtrusive, like a good backpack or a favourite pocketknife.
His ad's down in the classifieds now, but if you're interested, maybe throw him a PM and see if he's still making them?
