I have owned my 73 for a year and a half now. I have only had to replace the original Solex carb with a single 34 progressive weber. Well, now she needs a fuel pump, or someting along that line, just waiting for my bently to get here in the mail.
In the meantime I have popped out the interior and am getting ready to sand, undercoat, and primer. I want to replace the head liner eventually, but I am scared of the window envolvement. I have the sunroof off and am cleaning the tracks. She's a skeleton right now
Any suggestions, help, advice, or anything you all have to say would be appriciated. I have the only running bus in town, and I am not 'popular' because of it. Just looking for support and advice!! _________________ Seattle originally.... got lost in a corn field one day, that's how my '73 and I ended up here! |

How about some pics? You might not be popular, but you'll be happy with your bus! They're so much more fun to drive for some reason! Have you thought about colours yet? Jeremy |

Popularity is WELL over-rated. I really wish that I cared less about what people think of me. Does you head lining extend right to the back of the van, or does it just stop behing the front seats? Surely these aren't hard to push into the window rubber seal after being replaced. Maybe you could modify a new one slightly so that it stops short of the rubber. I bet that a nice plush velour corduroy would really dampen the acoustics in the bus and improve your chance of getting a decent sounding stereo setup!
Did you consider pulling the glass out? Are the rubber seals expensive? My van has no interior (sounds a bit silly but I'm sure you know what I mean), and I'm going to something similar myself. Maybe. |

A proper headliner replacement requires taking out all the windows. This beautiful craftsmanship we enjoy with these air-cooled VWs requires stepping up to the plate and doing it right. Taking out the windows is not a big deal, and it is a good opportunity to replace the rubber and touch up the channels.

no worries amskep - I'm up for it. just gotta save the $600AUD required for the rubber, and the other 600 I'll want to spend on sound deadening, rustproofing, insulation, primer, paint, filler, gun and compressor hire.
I'm awaiting the end of semester before I get on with it!
Any tips for safe glass removal and replacement? |
