Here is a short look at the new bus, and a short drive in it. I did not expect to be able to cruise it around the block in such a short time.

Sweet bus!! Looks super clean and seems to run smooth. I'm very jealous of your sliding door, I never new they were supposed to do that. Neither of the 2 busses I have had, had a slider that worked that well.

Can you explain how the slider works with the latch to close? i thought you had to grunt it from start to close!

this guy is a luxurious effortless slide, and once shut, pull the handle up to secure the door. I think that is the concept with any bus. Although with my 71 only I can shut it. But again, usually only a bus owner can shut a bus door. People who have never had one always give you that face like 'how the hell do you shut this thing?" I always tell people that it has to be shut calm but confidently. You can't force the slider. It doesn't work.

The P.O. of my Bus was shocked when he saw me calmly slide the side door forward and rotate the handle clockwise to secure it.

In a way you guys pissed me off. Now when I overhaul my slider this spring I won't be happy until my door operates like that! Very Happy
Can you tell me if all sliders work like that? Mines a 74.

I found some posts here saying the late bays don't do that. Our 78 sure won't, even after adjusting it.

Truth be told I have about 3-4 hours into that door. But I'm a looser and have no friends so I was able to spend the time Cool

The pull-to-secure feature was ended in '74 as VW started "decontenting" the bus to save on costs.

If you look at the handle cut-out in the door, the pull-to-latch doors have a cut-out that goes towards vertical, the later dumpster lid slammers have a cut-out just above horizontal.

While I am here, please lubricate your sliding mechanisms thoroughly, not with hapless spray applications of white lithium crap, but pointed, focused applications of engine oil at roller shaft/spindles and the bronze bushings in the slider hinge have ports. These doors are too good to let deteriorate.

you do not need to smear the track all greasy and gross, just the roller spindle to roller interface.

That is impressive!

My slider will close with some persuasion Wink , but once its open the handle just hangs down. No resistance whatsoever when pulling the handle upwards. Is there a way to disassemble the mechanism to see if a spring or something else is busted?

Try this:

http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=9144

The later doors have a big coiled up spring to give you the correct feel and a return to initial position.
