Steering Wheel

Anything else?

Ignition switch yes, 70, 71 only

I also will add that the key barrel is 71 only too, but can be superseded by the later type 113 905 855 B

The steering lock may also be 71 only as it fits the 70, 71 ignition switch but fits 71,72 and 73 key barrel and does not fit 70 and earlier key barrel

Steering wheel is the same as earlier type but has 72 + type contact ring and canceling ring. This simply can be screwed on to a earlier steering wheel making them the mythical "71 only steering wheel"

One other thing I have noticed, is the windshield washer knob seems to be 71 only as its bee hive shaped at the base where 68-70 was flat on the base, and in 72 they moved the washer switch to the steering column.

the other knobs in the dash I am not sure about? they also have the bee hive base.

Here's the info straight out of the parts book Vlad.
German built cars used 1 steering wheel (part number 311 415 651A (4/61 to 7/70) up to chassis number 310 2500 000) for cars up thru the end of the 70 model year, and then used 311 415 651D (8/70 to 7/71 (chassis numbers 311 2000 001 thru 311 2500 000)) for cars built in 71. The parts book definitely call out 2 different wheels (not counting the pigellaies, and the teaks for the 66 MY).
It's like you keep telling us, OZ had it's own rules, and things are different for the rest of the world. Rolling Eyes And the USA models were German built cars. Cool

I believe the parts book; I've just never seen one of these '71- only wheels in the wild. In fact, I had a customer years ago that wanted the "older style" wheel on his '72 Squareback, so I grabbed a wheel fom my stash and put it on. It slipped on the splines OK, but the crossbars hit the signal lever, so no dice.

On the '72 Notch that is now Fye's, it had an early style wheel stuck on it, and some genius had bent back the signal stalk (no, not me).

On Mike Fisher's '69, I needed to replace the steering wheel because one of the threads for the horn ring retainers had stripped out the threads. I grabbed the wheel from the '71 Automatic parts car and installed it on his '69.

So, like I said, I've never actually seen a "71 only" wheel.

The 71 only steering wheel is a reality. You can't get a 71 - on plastic cancelling ring onto a 68 - 70 wheel. The earlier hub is larger. I've tried -- you have to remove too much plastic.

The 67-70 metal cancelling ring will work but chew up your HTF 71 only switch really quickly.

Ah, so the difference is in the hub, not the splines? And, I suppose that the 71 plastic cancelling ring will work okay with 1970 and back signal switches?

Yep, splines are the same.

I've not tried a 71 on an earlier car but it should work -- the wheel tab is in a slightly different position on the 71 but should be close enough to hit the turn signal tab. I'll try and remember to take some side by side photos tomorrow.

For what it's worth, the '71-only steering wheels I've seen are made in Canada. The black plastic on the Canadian wheels is glossier and shrinks/cracks much faster than the German VDMs.

my point exactly! sure 71 had its own steering wheel with its own PN but the actual wheel minus the contacts and cancel ring is physically the same as the earlier type.

What people keep telling me is the splines are different and unique to 71 and nothing will fit the 71 but an original 71 wheel, but this is incorrect!

^ Trams observations are correct, no such thing as a 71 steering wheel from a physical point of view.

One thing I can relate to is in my daily there is normal ECUs and Police ECUs. Legend is the Police ECU is some magical thing that is worth stacks of money and makes your car somehow really fast!
99% of people with these cars and some general population believe this as true.

Reality is they are exactly the same as some types of general public ECUs but have a different PN to identify them in factory as well as later on when the police cars are sold off to the public. Its just of record keeping Wink

Like I said just unscrew the cancel ring and screw on the one you want.

I want to get myself a real nice flat4 repro and buy a 72,73 contact ring/cancel ring. screw it on at call it done, put it in the 71 notch.

I'm jealous of the 71 notch Smile

Interesting my cracked 71 # 651 D is made by VDM and has a stamp that reads 'C 16'. Does the 'C' mean Canada?

My 1970 wheel # 651 A has a logo of a steering wheel with a 'p' in the center. What company made this?

Unfortunately, the 71 plastic ring won't fit on the perfect 70 wheel I have. I tried, lost a plastic ring in the attempt.

Hmm? thats certainly interesting Question Never had that problem.

perhaps different manufacture?

I will have to check this out, but only if I had more steering wheels, I sold all but one last year. Confused

Next time I go to the shed I will check out the plastic ring and let you know a solution. I am thinking ream out the plastic ring the 2mm difference, but if thats no go, machine the steering wheel Razz

That'a Petri wheel. There's a branch company right down the street from me, that's still making steering wheels (but for new cars).
