I have the same set if so and I am pretty sure they would rub pretty bad on my 68. Maybe the 71 allows for the offset on those wheels where the swing axle doesn't. Anyhow I was just curious if you had to modify anything to fit them.

swing axle you can do the short Beetle axle swap.

Thanks W1K1 - I have read that thread before, and figured that is what I would have to do... I was just curious if he had a different set of wheels with a different offset that might work on my swing axles... probably not, but worth a shot.

Kirk's car ISN'T lowered. That's why they fit. Wink

I was not aware of my car being lowered... I have not got into that aspect yet but if I find that is what is preventing me from using my sprint stars, I will certainly be raising it!

Thanks for coming out to the show, was good to meet you. These's going to be some competition this year in your class, the dove blue squareback that was in the club line up was sold, and I'm sure they are bringing it to DubSplash this year. Bring it anyways!

I have never seen so much original paperwork on a car...ever. That is way out cool, hands down. Can't say I know anything much about the history of any car I've owned, except what the previous owners might have mentioned. Glad to see you've got all that organized, and that you're keeping up on the ride. Cool

Interesting how Herr Oppenheim was disenchanted with post-war Germany. Wonder what that was all about?

I am in total AMAZEMENT over the story of this Square! I too have a 71 Square (ironically it was originally it was the same color), and it makes me ponder what stories my own square could tell me if it could talk! All I know is that I am owner number 4, it spent all it's life on an island in the PNW, and I finally brought it back to the mainland where I drive the $#%* out of it! but to look at the paperwork that comes with your square (Kirk) is almost like looking at what my car might have come with. You Square is truly AMAZING DUDE! I look forward to seeing the paperwork you scan in, and CAN'T WAIT to see what you do with Oppenheim next!!! keep up the good work bro!

Got out in the shop this weekend to get the square ready for the first annual Pig Nose Type 3 Gang (PNT3G) meet. He had been sitting some, with a few unfinished details, so I did some brake work, and got it jumped off and running. Ran beautifully.

I left Denison heading for Mckinney (40 miles). First i swung in for gas. Lots of compliments and conversations.

i made it 15 miles when he started smoking. Luckily I was near my friend Jerrys house, so I pulled in. I started looking and found the passenger side valve cover Had sucked in.

Fixed it, but he then wouldnt start, and the battery was dead. Weird, as the generator is brand newly rebuilt. After getting a ride to town for a new battery (this one was old, and tested bad), he fired right back up and off i went.

It was about that time, the speedo stopped working. Perhaps, I should have been paying attention to what was happening around me, but it was running well at that point, with no noise and plenty of power. That would change soon.

Weather was beautiful, and Opie was running fine. I made it to Anna, (15 miles from my destination) when i lost all power. I shifted to third to climb a small hill and heard THUNK! The motor immediately began a deep deep thumping, and began to boil smoke. I pulled over immediately in a church parking lot and shut it down. I looked underneath and it was pouring oil.

Im no genius, but even i know thats bad. i phoned in for a ride, and took a glorious parking lot nap.

Luckily, I had a friend coming through where I was soon, so all I had to do was wait.

I was able to bum a ride from my friend Jerry who was going near Opies last stand to pick up a compressor with his trailer. In exchange for my help loading the compressor, we made our way back and nabbed him off the parking lot before the Baptists had him towed the next morning. We were in the preachers spot, and i doubt he would have looked kindly on a 44 year old car puking oil in his spot.

We took the ride of shame back to the shop. I do believe a long block is now in order. It did fire back up, and ran, but the losing power and blowing the main seal are both bad bad.

So hes back in the shop yet again.

He had no idea what it was worth. But I think I got a good deal because I promised to take care of it. And I have. Its always stored inside, never abused or lowered, and I've already turned down several offers to buy him, just because I wasnt comfortable with letting him go. Weird I know. Still has issues I need to sort, and now I figure it needs a motor.
