Was driving home this evening in the rain and partway through the drive the driver side started making a horrible squeaking noise. When I got home I lifted the wiper arm to make sure it wasn't the blade making the squeaking and it certainly was the shaft or something.
What is there to be done? Do I have to try and source a whole new assembly or what?

I'll admit this is a PIA job, but you need to pull the entire wiper assembly out of the car, then seperate the wiper shafts from the sleeves, so you can clean the shafts up, followed by greasing the shafts and reassembling the wiper assembly. I normally do that when I'm rebuilding the car, but sometimes you just have to fix stuff as it pops up.
The reason I say this is a PIA job, is that you're working on your head under the dash removing the wiper assembly. MAKE sure you DISCONNECT the battery first, as the wiper unit CAN cut off a finger.

That'd be nice but fortunately not needed yet. I had some time to go through the forums today and came across a tip from tram to pull off the wiper arms and get some WD40 onto the shaft.
I gave it a shot and so far so good. Will have to see if it stays good but so far no hanging upside down under the dash for me!! Cool
Cheers!

You might want to use some light oil now that you've kind of "freed" them up some. If you do this every so often, you might not need to get under the dash.
