I have a 78 westy with a cracked windshield. It came that way. I've been holding off replacing the windshield after researching all the rust issues. The windshield does leak. There are visible rust holes just below the seal. I have purchased a new seal and the entire lower windshield tray from Klassic fab.

My plan was to save enough money to take it to a body shop and have the guys install the new windshield and give them the lower windshield tray incase they need it.

But lately I've been thinking about just taking the windshield out myself and see how bad the damage is. My problem is that I don't want to remove it and then be stuck with an down bus if the damage is so bad I won't be able to re install the windshield.

Has anyone seen a windshield tray that was so rusted there was no way to install a windshield back in? I think it would be wise to take a look myself, but I don't want to take the chance that she will be down until I get the cash together for the repairs. I'm crossing my fingers that it won't be as bad as I think.

It might be easier to get a look from under the dash. Maybe even feel with your fingertips if that area is going to crumble.

My advice is to pull the windshield, rust never sleeps! Get it fixed before it gets too bad. Have you seen this thread?

I see the dilemma. If you don't pull the windshield, you can muddle along with your leak, while the rust slowly gets worse. But at least you are driving.

If you pull the windshield, you MUST deal with whatever is there before you can drive again. It's easy for an observer to say "do it now, cause it's just going to get worse."

However, this summer could be a significant portion of the time you have to enjoy the bus (especially if you let it rust to death).

Hmmm....

I would be tempted to roll it this summer, then tackle it in the fall. But I'm a hack, so your mileage may vary.

Or you can wait till you get a ticket for a cracked windsheild. Maybe then you will do it.

If a glass shop is nearby, drive there and remove the windshield on a Friday. Repair and paint on the weekend. Install the new glass and moulding at the shop on Monday. Or, do it yourself on the same schedule.

..IMHO...Get some syllacone sealer and squish it in the cracks in the old rubber seal and all the places where the old seal has shrunk and clean off the excess and enjoy your bus. Don't jump into this major project without the time knowledge and money to fix it properly...the "temporary" fix will slow down any more rusting by cutting off the moisture supply...I did this on mine over a year ago . Now I have the knowledge (thanks samba ) and the money; but have gotten busy and won,t have the time untill august when bisness slows down for vacations...TO those who disagree ; you are intitled to your opinion Cool ...IT,S NOT YOUR BUS Cool

But at the same time that's like leaving an unopened envelope of medical test results on your fridge. Doesn't affect most of your life, but sometimes you will glance at it in passing wondering what is hidden within.
That's why I have a windscreen rubber fund. The glass is in passable shape thankfully, as long as I can get it out intact. It's OE VW glass so it'll probably be a bit touchy.

Except that smearing a bunch of silicone in there will not stop the water coming in -- it will only make it rust faster by not letting the water that sneaks in behind the silicone out. Bad idea. It should not take a body shop more than a couple of days to fix it -- go ahead. You'll be glad you did.

And Ned, are you serious that you can get a ticket for a cracked windshield? You'd be lucky to drive in New Mexico for a year without getting a cracked windshield! Shocked

I did the silicon on the seals but first I picked out all the rust and used ospho, Ospho puts navel jelly to shame.

i think the easiest way to get it out is to pick a corner (pass top is nice) and push GENTLY and it should slide right out of the groove and then just follow it along where it comes out and it should be out in a minute or two. Smile
