Looking for the correct exploded/install diagram for a 72 Westy rear bake drum assembly. They do not move when pedal is pushed or e-cable pulled. I wonder if they are assembled wrong. I only find the wrong pics. All internal parts have been replaced. Additionally, the 'bad' light is lit. Yet, the new e-cables should still move the shoes.

This isn't probably going to help one bit, because I only had the drum and wheel off, but I have one picture of the rear drums on my '72

Fluid? New brake lines? How are the solid lines?

from 1972 to 1979 the setup is essentially the same. What manuals do you have?

Ok. the pic does resemble my brakes and , from what little I can see they are assembled the same. No, I have not replaced any lines, nor the mc or booster. New resevoir and line to mc. I will replace the rubber lines and mc, next. I still do not understand why the e-cable and arm moves nothing.

I only have the Bentley Official Service manual for type 2 68-79. And routinely does not include pics for 'my' bus. I am aware that 72 was a split year. changes were made mid year. Pretty sure mine is the pre-changes model-no engine bay access door from inside. gas filler is on passenger side.

You do have two systems on the rear, the e-brake is the cable, the pedal is hydraulic. So if the e-brake arm/lever isn't moving then you ether have rusted cables or a part in the linkage that is not moving, probably rusted solid, or broken, and is a common issue.

The brake pedal is hydro, so if you are having problems there, that could be related to fluid level, MC, bad/old lines etc.

If neither work, then yeah you probably have it assembled incorrectly, and I would triple check that. Brakes are not something to mess around with.

The Bentley has everything you should need to do a full R&R on front and rear brakes - parts are readily available.

Actually '71 was the first year of disk/drum, so '72 is the same, and on up the line until '79 the brakes are the same, possibly with small changes. Almost all drum brakes I have worked on function the same - the linkages may designed a little different, but on a Bus, they should be all the same or really close.

Trust me, I know the nuances of a '72 Very Happy I'm not sure what I'm missing here, but if you can take some pictures of what you have, we can compare and try to e-diagnose.

Have you turned the adjustment screws to see if they move that way?

For what it's worth here's a shot without the hub on:

Good luck! Took me months of spare time in the evenings to do mine, but I learned a TON and when I test stomped on the brakes and came to a screeching halt it was all worth the effort. Cool

(and no, I hadn't routed my ebrake cable yet so ignore that hehe)

Note that the 72 spreader bar is different and that the fastener on the rear most shoe is a pin with a special clip (not shown in the diagrams?). You can see this clip in the pic above and there is a pic in my gallery.

Hey, does anyone happen to have a spare 72 brake spreader bar, I found out I'm missing one in my right rear drum . I could not get my emergency brake cable to adjust properly and found out this part was missing when I pulled the drum. Any help with locating this part would be greatly appreciated. Surprised

NOTE:

The '72 and early '73 ebrakes had a peculiar issue with brake shoes that are not at full *thickness*. I have happened across cheap new shoes that scrimp on lining thickness, and you must also be aware of this problem as your linings wear.

The lever that is pulled by the cable will hit the wheel bearing housing as the shoes wear. A shoe adjustment will not fix it. Tightening the ebrake cables will not fix it. As a matter of fact, I have visited buses with a tight ebrake handle that doesn't even bother slowing the car down. You need to grind the inner edge of the lever in a nice smooth crescent around the wheel bearing housing to maintain ebrake function as your shoes wear.

I nominate a further discussion . . . I am looking at Bumblebus' immaculate rear brake assembly, and I see no chance of the lever ever reaching the wheel bearing housing, but I sure as heck have seen levers only a scant inch away.
Other observations or experiences?
Colin

Thanks for the info.I'll give them a try. I too also live on a hill with no e-brake. Hopefully I can get rid of my Cinder Block soon. Laughing
