To upload photos for Classified Ads or into the Photo Gallery on the site, you often need to resize the photos that your digital camera takes. Current digital cameras take photos that are very large, as they are suitable for printing, but the large size is not necessary for use on the Internet.

Various resizing programs and tips are below.

For Classified Ads:
If you are placing a Classified Ad and cannot get the photos to work, if the ad won't place or "times out," or you get returned to the login screen, this means your photos were too large. If you cannot get them resized - Place the ad with no photos then email them to me - EverettB at [email protected]
I will re-size and add them for you.

Resizing Programs

Windows 7/8/10

Resizing on a Mac using iPhoto:
Under your FILE menu in iPhoto you have the EXPORT option. Select it and you will see that you have the option to resize an image.

Another Mac program:

Windows XP, download this program and install it:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe
Then, right click on the saved picture and hit resize pictures. Then click advanced, then custom, and make it 640 x 480 for classified photos, 100x100 for avatars.

Vista:

Does anyone know how to get the file size down below 8k in iPhoto? Even at 15x15 it is still 8k.

I don't know the answer for iPhoto but it has to do with the JPG "compression ratio" if a 15x15 image is still 8k. Look for where to change that setting

Here are some instructions for using the XP Program "ImageResizer," mentioned in this first post in this thread:

1. Locate the picture(s) on your computer. In the image below, I am resizing a single photo and it located on my desktop:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

2. Right click on the image (as seen above) and select Resize Pictures
3. A box will pop up:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

4. Using the box above, select the Small option for Classifieds photos and press Ok
5. After hitting Ok, you will now have 2 files:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

6. Use the (Small) file as the photo for your ad.

Tip:
If you have more than one photo, you can select all of them and right click on one to resize all of them at once:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

======================================
If you have Paint Shop Pro (or a trial version of it):
1. Open image
2. Select Image -> Resize on the menus
3. Change size to 640x480 (or whatever)
4. Make sure you save in JPG format.

If you don't have a commercial product, you can use the free "Paint" program that comes with windows.

Steps for Paint:
1. Open image
2. If you don't know the size of your image already, select Image -> Attributes from the menu. Note the size, it will probably be something like 1280 by 960
3. Select Image -> Stretch/Skew from the menus.
4. Change the percentages. If the image is 1280x960, use 50% to shrink it down to 640x480 pixels in size.
5. Save your image.
6. Upload to site.

Im trying this with the "Paint" program in XP. Im starting with a 119k image. No matter how much I Stretch/Skew it, even down to 5%, its still 7.xx KB.

I tried downloading the ImageResizer, and since this is a work computer it wont take the download.

Any other suggestions?

I use Adobe Photoshop and use the Save for Web option (as stated before this comes out medium quality, but it still shows up perfectly fine for avatar use). If anyone would like me to resize avatars for them, I would be happy to help.

If you are more of a do-it-yourself type person, I would suggest downloading the program Irfranview (this was also previously posted in this thread). It's a very easy to use program. If you need help using it, I would be more than happy to help you with that as well.

EDIT: I no longer have a program to resize pictures. I would like to help, but it's not possible anymore.

You are probably doing everything right but the program is not able to change the JPG "compression" setting so your photo can't become small enough.

Can I post a link (url or otherwise) to a pic on Photobucket.com instead of uploading the pic when I place an ad?

Not for the Classifieds, external photos are not allowed.

maybe a little more advanced tutorial on how to do it with photoshop using "Save for Web". for this, i used photoshop 7. i have no idea what's current, i can only assume the layout hasnt changed much

1. open the desired image with photoshop

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

2. crop it to size, or leave the proportions as is

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

3. from the "File" menu, select "Save for Web..."

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

4. in the new window that appears, select the "Image Size" tab. from there, set the larger of the two numbers to 100, since this is the max size for avatars on thesamba.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

5. click on the arrow inside the white circle. this brings down another menu. there, select "Optimize to File Size..."

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

6. set the desired file size to 6KB, since this is the max file size for avatars on thesamba

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

7. once the file is the correct size, click on save and then upload that image to your profile in the Control Panel as an avatar

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

i've had better luck with microsoft photo editor (comes with the MS Office pack?) than with paint.

What size are you doing? I tried on a 1280x1024 picture I have, resizing it to various smaller sizes and lost no image quality.

For those on a limited budget, you can get a free program called The Gimp (Graphic Image Manipulation Program).
It can be downloaded for free here.
http://www.gimp.org/
This was started as part of the Linux movement, but has been ported over to Windows.
There are no Spyware, or AdWare attached to this program, and it has about the same power as Photoshop, without having to pirate it from your buddy, or use a crippled version.
