Also check that your fiber pad under your rotor in the distributor is oiled and the shaft. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD

Well since its an msd distributor that changes a few things. Get simple and rev the engine at the throttle outside the car and locate the area of the sound. Id freak out too if I heard a goose when reving my engine. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD

U can get crafty and make sure. Half inch ratchet, extension , socket, screwdriver holding the alt pulley and check. Feel in the vanes for plastic bag or rag, etc. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD

The old mans engine does that whenever the carb to manifold bolts get abit loose
Its an old twin throat weber DCN, very hard to get at the bolts to tighten them up. |

| I assume it's a type 1 engine. Pull the belt and run it (for less than a minute) and see if the noise goes away. If it does it's either the fan or the alternator or the belt itself. |

WELL
this is what i found, started the engine without the alt belt as suggested, and no noises, when i checked the alt pulley and tried to move by hand i noticed a litle freeplay but not ath the fan fan part but at the pulley end, when i dissasembled it i found that the part in the shaft (where the woodruf key goes) was a litel bit enhanced the woodruff key has a bit of free play , so what can i do now?
i guess the goose was hiding there , between the pulley and the alt cause i started the engine and was no noise! |

If the wooddruff key is the part that rounded off and took damage and not the slot on the alt shaft, then your in luck. All u need is a replacement key and pulley. I dont know if they sell an oversize woodruff key, but its possible u may need to have one made after u clean up the rounded slot if theres damage there. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD

What are you running for the alternator pulley? I've had the pretty chrome pulleys, both EMPI and SCAT and had problems with both. It's the way they are made.
The inner half has a center that is like a circle with two sides cut off straight. The outer half has a corresponding opening. This is the only thing that keeps the two halves from spinning against each other. Well, the hole on the outer half gets "wallowed" out and allows it to spin, which loosens the nut and therefore the entire pulley.
The stock pulley, on the other hand, has a pair of tabs and slots in the two halves that prevent that problem.
Another example of "chrome won't get you home." _________________ I'm not losing my hair, it's just retired and relocating further south.

Well time for another UPDATE!
I found the real culprit! while i was removing the alternator y notice that the fan was a litle bit loose, y tried to remove with my hands and couldnt, and tried with a plier just to see how much torque it had and the nut was almost finger tight!
i removed and inspected the nut and the nut it shot , the inside part!
so i need another fan nut! and im gonna try it with a new one! |

Glad you found it. Youll have to ensure that your fan shaft slot on the fan isnt rounded. If you have good feel, you can tell with the nut finger tight. A new hub fan nut and washer kit is like 10 bucks. A replacement fan is about 20$. This time, use blue locktight and torque it to 42 lbs. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD
