Whatever you call it,
72 SB the "relay" will start "rattling" will static up the radio, quits while the blinkers are on.
signals and E-flashers work fine, but I'm guessing the flasher is dying, or is it getting tickled by some random current, loose were etc?
If I was to replace it, what kind works? generic 3-prong? VW specific? 72 SB only? _________________ 1972 1302

You need a European-style flasher relay. It should have the same terminal numbering as the stock one (49a, 31 and 49 or "+").
The reason you cannot use a generic one without some extra work is because the VW turn signal circuit expects the flasher to alternate between 12v+ and ground. The generic ones alternate between 12v+ and OPEN.
Aircooled.net sells one that is claimed to work with LED lights. This would be a great choice if you ever plan to install LED turn signal bulbs in the future.

I've seen the listing at ac.net before and it had a picture of the Tridon EP-35... I'm not totally convinced that would be the best one for lower-than-stock draw LEDs, mostly because they say "bulb failure indication" which means they flash differently based on the load...
I don't know if the relays that UltrabrightLEDs se might be better suited to such application: CF13GL-02
