Route from Buffalo to Granny Grose's

Looking at several atlas' and current road maps I have plotted the following route. I will most likely stay overnight some place in North PA Hwy 449 to 6 East. I don't really want to go East too much to have to go back West, one of my quirks in life! Looked at altitudes and most around 2500 ft.

Buffalo >>20 East to 19 South which becomes 449 in PA to 6 East to 287 South to 220 West to 44 South to 15 South to 45 West.

OR should I take 6 East all the way to 15 South?.

15 South Looks like a bigger highway but as long as it's paved and has some shoulders I don't mind. Will not be travelling in dusk or dark.

I'm looking for someone who has driven these roads and their opinion. I do tend to get bored with too much big highway. I will leave Toronto area early Wednesday and stop someplace just to sleep and then leave early Thursday morning for Granny Grose's

Transport trucks galore? Lots of towns? I only fear fog and ice, rain doesn't bother me and I'd sure hope that I didn't get stuck behind transports going up hill Rolling Eyes

Got any advice to give me? Very Happy

Experienced driver all terrain, tendency to speed Embarassed

Got lots of fuses, bulbs, a siphon pump.

U.S. 219 South out of Buffalo is a nice drive through the Twin Tiers and into central PA. If you want to avoid interstate, you could go east on 322, 22 or further south Rte. 30. There are a lot big mountains that way however. Twisted Evil

A lot of 15 in PA is now a interstate like highway. (divided, 65 mph speed limit) I think most of the old road is still there but it's not marked as 15 anymore. It could be easy to navigate but I don't have any first hand knowledge.

Tim I understand what you are saying and I have a Magellan but I'm not real comfortable to count on it alone. I'm looking for personal experience re roads, trucks. I just couldn't go through another trip like last years further west in PA. I'm not anxious at all about NY, just asking personal opinions. Don't want to go out of my way unless I have to. It's a long trip for me, followed by another one directly up to Western Michigan.

I used to live in the area. In Salladasburg, PA off Rt 287. Your route sounds good. I would rather do 287 than Rt. 15. Maybe stay on the north and east side of the Susquehanna on old route 147 and 220 through Montoursville and Muncy down to Rt. 45. That would be mored direct and flatter than
Rt. 44.
Be prepared for a shock when you see what fracking for natural gas has done to North Central PA. There will be a lot of water tankers on the roads there.

Buses By The Beach, it's a VW Gathering to raise money for Burn Victims. I'm hoping I'm finally going to get there. It's in West Olive, Michigan, between Holland and Grandhaven at Camp Blodget. Smile

There are some fully-grown hills in that part of PA.
Hopefully not as big as the one I encountered cutting over to Jersey Shore from Rt 15 a while back. That damn thing went on forever!

If I come to Grannys, I'm planning on coming to Carlisle and then going cross-country on backroads.
Sure is a pretty part of the State.

they call that north central part of Pennsylvania God's Country.. truely beautiful and fairly remote at times.. Ohh and watch out for the wild ELK, they're a bit bigger than deer. wouldn't want to hit one.

I had a close encounter with a moose in Nova Scotia while on my moto some years back. By close I mean he crossed the road 100 yards in front of us at a rapid pace. That was close enough for me!
I slowed right down and for the next 100 miles I studied every patch of scrubbery on the side of the road to see if it was moving!

Studying the sides of the road will drive you batty in a hurry! Moose are only an issue in Cape Breton for the most part. Northern New Brunswick on the other hand...

We had a young moose come out on the road in front of us in C.B. We were on a back road to a waterfall. It trotted up the road in front of our car and we followed along. It was pretty cool. Prefer a moose over a bear.

Good luck on the road trip Daizee! Sounds like it will be a great trip! I found all of that area very nice to drive in. Especially the less busy roads.

As you say...without pictures it never happened!

Thanks for all the input people. I will take pics but hard to do when driving and as I travel only with a blind 10 lber, she's no help! I really don't want to do InterStates. I have a few options now.

I hear ya, I've plotted our NY to Maine trip for July with very nearly zero interstates.. just for the very last home stretch after 10days on the open (back) roads.
funny thing is I've been on nearly all of them already at one time or another. love the blue line highways.
no matter which, you'll have a great time.. it's beautiful country down there. and there's one of a very few "Dark Sky areas" in central PA.

Thank you VWgirl. I see Wellsboro is on my road, so may be that's where I will stop in mid late afternoon for an overnighter. I'm only going to be on 220 for a jig and then jog onto 44. I'll start out on 287 and if I get bored, then I'll go across 9 SE to 15. I enjoyed 15 on my way home last year.

If I was leaving earlier, I'd arrange a stop but I'm going to be pushing thru Wed & Thurs.

I was just up in that area about 2 weeks and got hungup in a late Spring snowfall of about 10" in Warren Pa.. Doubt that anyone will hit snow now but as many agree it is some beautiful country..

I would recomend taking Route 89 out of NY head for Route 15 into Pa, that will get you in the general area, drive at your pace and don't fret it.. There is some East Coast Mountians unfortunatly your be cutting acrross them but nothing that the Dasie Mobile can't handle. Its about a 5 hour roll for you, perhaps you can hookup with some Canidians headed south to this event as many usually attend. Ohooo bring Beer.

I was going to attend with some of the Folk from Bus Depot but family and wedding attendance is manatory. Oh well.

This is where your headed. Perhaps you can print out a Mapquest in the event that you don't have GPS or lose signal in the woods.
