I finally got around to making one of these myself! I did of course have to make some modifications though. I wanted to have a tach that had a max rpm reading that would be room fit for a 1600, so instead of using a 8k tach, I used a 6k tach. The specific one I used was an Autometer Autogage 2306. I remade the gauge face in order to work with the new tach. The only other different thing that I did from the original post was a made my own needle, shaped out of a piece of pvc pipe. This thing is awesome!

The wire that supplies power to the switch and the wire from the switch to the defroster grid are still intact and working in every way. This modification is a separate wire that does not interfere with defogger operation. Look at the Bentley wiring diagram and you will see this. _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

If you are disconnecting a wire to the defrost switch entirely ( not piggybacking) then how is that switch working anymore? _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

That may work but now your rear defrost won't work, correct ? We kind of need that here in the northeast. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

I don't know if this has been mentioned in some other thread, but it may be of use to someone here. I put a tach in my '74 Riveria Camper some time ago and needed to run the wire from the tach back to the ignition coil. I didn't really want to add another non-original wire to the engine compartment, so did this instead. My '74 features the long useless "test socket" in the engine compartment, and it finally came in handy. After disconnecting the battery, I unscrewed to socket to access the back. My bus still had the grey wire with a green strip attached to the negative side of the coil. This was cut at the back of the test socket. There is a blue wire with a white stripe at the back of the socket too. Cut this from the socket and join it directly to the previously cut grey wire with green stripe. Reinstall the socket. Now go to the dash and disconnect the blue wire with white stripe from the rear window defogger switch. In my case this wire was long enough to connect directly to the tach with no further modifications! What you have done is utilized some extra wiring that was already there that no longer served its original purpose anyway. And it looks stock so you can tell everyone about your "rare" factory tach! Please note that this procedure will work on models equipped with heated rear windows and test sockets only. US spec 1973 and later buses will work but I don't know what year VW discontinued the test socket.... Hope this simplifies someones installation. _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

I bought a Mercedes tach/clock combo yesterday and I will be doing the mods to make it match the speedo when I get it. Best part is with a Subaru motor I could leave the gauge face the same if I wanted to because the redline is correct on the one I bought.

This is a great thread. My issue is I have a tach but I also have a gas heater/timer/clock. So if I install the tach and leave the clock, where do all the idiot lights/gas gauge go?
This is kind of my problem now. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

I have one of Chris' (Deluxe Dials) tachs. It has been working flawlessly for about 7 months now. I recommend him.

They do look better quality but the JK ones have the needle that matches the speedometer.
I couldn't afford either so just stuck this £5 ebay bargain in instead.

Hello Zebedee, I have an original VDO clock in there so don't plan on changing with this bus, but if I was buying here in the UK I think much prefer these to the JK ones, the latebay thread, and the images, indicates better quality by the look of them:
