This is a shout out to the drivers and crew of the 6 Syncros that completed the Hell's Revenge trail during this year's Syncro Solstice. The drivers in this group consisted of myself, Brian, Bill, David, Joseph, and Jeff.
In my opinion this is an accomplishment that elevates the reputation of the Syncro as a serious off-road vehicle, as this trail is considered more or less a rite of passage within the rock crawler community.
I am interested to know if any other Syncros have previously completed this trail.
Enjoy the pictures.

Jeff Lyons, ItsaSyncro, was another on that trip, pics on the Main Solstice Thread. Not sure why they moved it out of this forum, but, thats where the main thread is now.
Awesome shots. I am there in two weeks! _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

CMORRIS- I was there Joseph blue syncro, old dude with the handicap parking sticker! Yeh! that is the hardest trail I've ever done. Home now trying to fix the van. All I need to do is fix the bent sub frame, muffler, alignment, new bumper and end caps! But ha we had fun! And thanks to the Jeep that pulled me from over the edge! Can't wait tell 2013! PS loved Bill, hope he gets his bashed side and broken 930 axel fixed soon. Oh and my license plate is still out there, if any body sees a AZ. plate out there call Joseph! _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Jeff and Joseph, sorry for being unable to recall your names initially.
I also realized that Brian posted his pictures of this trail run on the main Syncro Solstice thread. You can see those here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...;start=202
Joseph, I am still chuckling to myself thinking about the handicap permit dangling from your mirror. No doubt the DMV would revoke that if they saw this thread! Did you really sustain sub-frame damage, or are you talking about your skid-plate?
Bill's dent was from the Hey Joe Canyon trail the day before. However, he did manage to blow out a front outer CV on Hell's Revenge. |

It should be mentioned that along with some extremely experienced guys, were a few "green" folks that white knuckled the entire thing, and owned it. Yet another reason why these guys just made history. You, gentlemen, have upped the ante for Solstice 2013. Outstanding group, performance, personalities and all around experience. There were a ton of incredible experiences this year, and this one was monumental, even by Solstice standards.

Amazing. He looks and sounds like he'd go anywhere anytime he felt like a challenge! Is the trunk up sort of a tail end stabilizer or some other function or just to do it? _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I'm sure the trunk lid is up because it won't latch with that mountain bike hanging halfway out of it. |

Great stuff! Well done.
It sounds like there was a little damage to at least one or two vehicles... Can you guys fill us in a bit more on that stuff and how it happened? How were the vans set up? Any stock? What were the main challenges/drawbacks/advantages for a Syncro?
And where the heck are the videos? This is the inter-web you know... _________________ -James

The vans ranged from bone stock to fully built. Brian (experienced offroad jeeper) our leader had 14" tires, rear locker, WBX and stock gearing. My van has 3 knobs, solid shaft, 6.17 gearing, 16" tires, modified front bumper, coil over suspension, and custom full skid plates.
There was lots of nose scraping even with my increased approach angle. The last mile or two of the trail was basically a double black diamond trail. This is where most of the damage occurred while doing some serious rock crawling. We had to cross large jagged bedrock both uphill and downhill. There aren't any pics of this section because we were busy trying to make it out and spotting each other. It was a long day and we didn't want to turn around and go back so we went for it. _________________ Syncronize it!

Awesome stuff.
I know nothing about this trail but I see other videos on Youtube of highly modifed vehicles rolling over tackling some impossible looking stuff and they are labelled Hells Revenge. It's hard for me to believe a scynro could handle some of this stuff. Did you guys do these sections or is there more than one option (i.e. easier and harder variations) in some places?
More photos and video please! _________________ 87 Syncro Hightop Camper
