|

as part of my auto upgrade/rebuild i ordered a rebuilt t.c. from german transaxle. after pulling the trans i test fit the new converter with the trans separated from the diff and the moving shafts removed from inside the stator gear. the bentley says the t.c. nose should be 10mm below the bellhousing face. my original t.c. nose sat 3-4 mm below the face. the new one is flush with the face. also the sealing surface depths of the two converters is 12.3 vs 16. i talked with oregon trans and they offered to ship me a new converter. they also suggested that the stator shaft could have moved out reducing the clearance to the bellhousing. i dont see any evidence of the shaft being spun or moving, and according to the final drive diagram in bentley the stator shaft would have to move out through the final drive housing to reduce the clearance. The van drove fine except for the leaks despite not having the correct clearance on the t.c. to bellhousing. How important(and accurate) is this clearance. What is going on here

If the clearance is incorrect you will be putting a load outside of design parameters on the flex plate and thrust bearing in addition to whatever loads are put on the transmission. |

yes i understand that. im trying to identify what is keeping the torque converter(s) from seating at the correct level. |

If you are certain you have the torque converter fully down onto the spline and it still isn't sitting at the correct distance, you are probably going to need to find another transmission and take some measurements. |

German Transaxle would be the expert on this. |

I am having this same issue so I did the search and came to this post. I can get the engine about 1/8" from going home to the transmission before the whole thing binds up and stops turning easily. I think I figured it out though. A little background on my project. It's an 86 and I'm going from the 2.1 to a '07 EJ25 with an Outfront Adapter. I also brought the trans to the shop that rebuilt it three years ago to have it checked and they only replaced the torque converter. It took them 45 minutes to get the new torque converter on but as it turns out it was never all the way on.
What I finally found after much cursing and head scratching it that the bushing from the old torque converter is still on the stator shaft and is preventing the new torque converter from going on all the way! Unfortunately it looks like I pushed the bushing into my new converter by trying to bolt the whole thing together. So, has anyone ever seen this before and does anyone have a great idea on how to get that old bushing out of there?

I’m not sure if this is related at all, but…
For my bostig build I had to make sure the bostig flexplate fit over the small boss in the center of the TC.
It didn’t and I had to grind the TC smaller (German Transaxle purple TC) so that it was a clearance fit and the TC could bolt up flush to the flexplate.
I think I’m talking about the wrong side of the TC and you are having problems seating it on the transmission side. _________________ 1987 Westy Auto Bostig 2.0 Ztec |

I thought this was the problem at first. The centering boss in the middle in the torque converter that goes into the flex plate hub is a tight fit. I cleaned the paint off the torque converter centering boss with emery cloth and got it all to mate up fine eventually. Good idea though. |

I was able to get the old bushing out with this tool I made. It grabbed the old bushing from behind through the oil drain holes behind the seal.
