So I pulled my 1776 apart to reseal, repaint tins and change heads. It's about 15-20 years old unknown miles, been in 5 different cars now. Anyway all looks great except pitted exhaust lifters, cam and intake lifters look new? Berg/Engle cam EP 12 blank, Berg lifters (all circa 2000). Any theory why exhaust would pit and not Intake? Engine has been spun over 7000 rpm many times, Berg dual springs, good oil. _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

I've had a similar experience recently, with a minor exception.
Tore down my 1679 and found the lifters were pitted. The difference in my experience is, the camshaft exhaust lobes were worn and the intake lobes look unaffected.
Web cam 119 and old school reground lifters of unknown origin. _________________ I have learned over the years.

I've thought the exhaust lobe by the flywheel might wear out first, because it's farthest from the thrust bearing and gets the least oil, but i can't think of why the other exhaust lobe would wear faster. |

4 is worst followed by 3,1 then 2, but just exhaust, intakes and all cam lobes perfect. _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

Check the spring installed height, maybe the exhaust springs are too tight. |

I'll take a peek at that, interesting thought. Putting different heads on it anyway. _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

Yes your exhaust has more force on the lifter face when it opens against cylinder pressure. |

New heads only have HD single springs, will the orange box C B lifters hold up? Or should I run the CB Light weights? Nicely broken in EP 12 cam _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org
