I need a good close-up of a Gene Berg style T shifter. One of my students is going to try to make a Berg style knob out of metal. Measurements would also be good.

I posted in an earlier message that I have a student who would like to do a glass knob for me. We were talking about how to mount it today and came up with shoving a shifter extension in it while still hot, or shoving some type of insert into the knob while hot.
I'm at a loss for any type of insert to put into it. Any suggestions? I thought about welding 2 or 3- 13 mm nuts together.

If he can pull it off, a blown glass knob would be sweeeeeet!!!

Don't want to be a downer, but the hot soft glass thing may be hard to do because of thermal expansion mismatch. But you might be able to press the hole with a carbon rod and then put a threaded insert in after it cools with a clear epoxy. It would probably look ok if you didn't get any bubbles in the epoxy.

If you have a shop class with lathes they should be able to make the inserts out of bar stock with no trouble, but you might have to buy a metric tap for them. On the other hand, you might get lucky at the hardware store it you have one that has those racks of shallow drawers with odd nuts and bolts and stuff. There is usually a metric section and they may have the inserts already made.

Burned fingers!
Metal shavings!
Glued hands!

Good luck!
