Its out (1967), but I need to save the axle tubes and axle. How would you clean off this crud to remove the axle tube ? I have a new , rebuilt tranny, but I need these tubes, axle and spider gears. Are these toast ?

Are you really asking for instructions on how to degrease something? Get some Purple Power, a stiff brush and start working at it.

No. I am asking what you would do to clean what you see as I need to save them. I have never used "purple power", nor have I ever removed a transaxle before. Rebuilt a motor, yes, but not this. I used high pressure water and air to clean my case when I rebuilt that. This is a whole different animal, as it seems caked is some foreign material, and I don't know if this cake is beyond what one might consider toasted.

It's 50 years worth of grease and dirt. Purple Power is available at any Wal Mart and a stiff nylon or wire brush would make short work of it. It's just dirt, nothing to be worried about. So to answer my question then, yes, you're asking how to degrease this transmission.

Water and de-greaser. Hot water if possible.

If you use Purple Power, don't let it sit on the bare metal too long or it will discolor it.

Oven Cleaner works too... same bare metal thing can apply.

I've always had great luck with it. You don't need caustic chemicals to remove grease and road dirt.
OP: Spray on the degreaser of your choice and let it sit for a few minutes then hit it with the wire brush. That shit will fall off of there. Rinse it off with the hose and you're good to go.

I do have some easy off grill cleaner. That might do it. I used it on my pistons and it did well on the carbon

Notice the hole in the axle tube boot. I'm worried that might have that crap in there and ruined the spider gear and fulcrum plates.

I recently did this for my '64 and it looked very similar to yours. On my car it was not 50 years of just dirt but also 50 years of slow tranny and engine oil leaking. The wet oil absorbs road dirt and becomes like a thick tar over many years.

The best method I found was to first use a soft scraper of some kind like a plastic or wood putty knife to get rid of the big stuff.

After all the heavy duty chunky stuff was off, then start with the chemicals/degreasers of your choice. I tried all the usual stuff, including simple green etc but I found that a brass brush and a large tub of mineral spirits did the best job. It makes a big mess and remember that the tar like stuff contains old oil so don't do this somewhere that you don't want to be a big mess - like on your driveway or next to your vegetable garden(!)

The fastest way would be this:

If you are worried about getting anything in there just get an old plastic bag or something and wrap it around the old boots and tape or tie it off somehow on both sides of the boot while you are using chemicals.

Good point, but I was worried that whatever is under there now might be toast. It seems like split boots is quite common, so maybe I am just getting ahead of myself with worry

If you are just using the axles, tubes, and spider gears why not just remove them and forget trying to clean the whole trans?

No need to get your knockers all wadded up cleaning the beast.

Scrape the shit off around the 6 bolts and remove them.
Pull the axle tubes. A Big 2 jaw puller (6") willl help.
Get big circlip pliers to remove the circlips and pop out the axles and side gears.
No worries about crap getting inside.

If you need the spider gears or diff assembly stuff a rag in the side cover holes.
Remove the 8 bolts around the side cover on the clutch lever side. Drift this off first and the whole diff assembly may pop out without needing to remove the starter side cover as well.

You shouldnt have a whole lot of mess to clean up and your lawn wont be damaged by harsh chemicals,,,
