There is a big difference in difficulty installing the sliding window into a van with the black plastic air vent (88-91). That is a distinctly different install that requires modification of the window vent and perhaps the window frame itself. It also requires modification of the seal that goes between the vent and the window and the application of a proper sealant to that seal when installing.

Is there a difference between a 1987 rear vented window and the 88-91's?
I put an 87's into my 84 without modification.
Wasn't a simple slip in, but then again I shouldn't have been doing it by myself at 2am either! |
The 88+ have the rear plastic vents, the 87- only have the frame at the rear. The body is the same size and you can swap between them. _________________ '91 Carat Westy

Getting back to dogs liking air...
PacNorthWesty I wonder if you have rear facing jump seats. My dog used to love to sit in the one behind the driver's seat and hang his head out. Great advantage for him was that hard stops were never a problem. |

I think his Westy was sold. He hasnt logged on since Oct. 2013.
My dogs use the cooler on the dvrs side to reach the slider and the RMW metal storage box on the passenger side to reach that window. Flipping the slides would make it alot easier for them to reach the wind while on the zbed that is always folded flat. |

Installed a left rear most slider and took apart the side oe sliders and flipped the glass. Super easy, just takes time and having a window tinter on hand on a saturday because the inside of the glass becomes the outside of the glass. Started at 1pm , took a dinner break and done. Crappy night pic |

Newfisher,
Did you install that window backwards so it opens from the rear? _________________ And then there were two...downsized to 83 Doka &

Sort of. You remove the window and dissmantle it. Every scraper, felt and lock channel comes apart. You then put the front section in the rear and the rear section in the front so the inside of the glass is now the outside, or flip them/spin them around. Reassemble the window and install. You dont need an extra lock bar as you modify the current ones. I picked up a set of used sliders thinking I would need something, but didnt. The dogs dig it. |

Page 2 has directions on how to rearrange the glass to do that. |

I wouldnt call them directions, but more of reference photos and vague at that. I was confused until I just dove in and tore them apart. Once they are out, on a table and you spread them apart, it will all make sense. Describing it or taking pictures of glass seems to make it confusing.....for me |

The pictures and words associated with them are easier to understand than your blurb above so they may be more helpful to others.
If you took pictures of the process and have better directions to add to the thread please do so. |

Hmm, what I see are the words " I had my windows reversed" and then some pictures. A few posts later it states " here is my step by step" and just pictures. There are several unanswered questions in this thread, some with wrong answers like the lock bar. I was just trying to clear things up as it was fresh in my mind and I had just finished them, sorry no pics of glass laying on tables and lock bar lengths, I figured there were enough of those already in here. |

Hi syncrodoka, it looks like the images you posted on page 2 have aged out (after many years). Any chance you still have them somewhere and can repost? I'm really interested in this mod for my dogs.
Also, does anyone know if you did this to both side slider windows, and reversed the side on which they lived, would the existing tint then be on the correct side of the glass and eliminating the need to re-tint?
-- EDIT: Research answered my own question. You can do the above window swap only on 1980-84 models. '85 up Vanagons took a slightly smaller window in the sliding door than on the driver side.
Thanks
