Hi folks,
The driver's wing-window on our '88 swings shut at speeds over 40 MPH.
And I hear there's no way to tighten the pivots themselves.
So.... I'm wondering what creative solutions have been developed for keeping these things propped open at highway speeds when they're no longer capable of doing it themselves. Bungee cords? Custom-made latches? Other nifty things? _________________ Basil — '88 Dove Blue Westy. |

The friction to hold the window open comes from the lower pivot. I think you can adjust the tension on that pivot, but may have to remove the wing window frame to get to the screw.

My Vent windows don't stay open too well either. I also notice they don't really open far enough to blow on me either. Is there a stop or limit to the travel of the vent? Can it be opened further? Mine is sloppy also.

Mine open about 150 degrees (pointing back at me) so you might investigate what is keeping yours from doing that. |

Maybe not the most elegant solution, but certainly works at any speed:

Wow, thanks for all the helpful replies folks. Especially since there were older threads on the same topic -- dunno why I didn't remember to use the search function first.
At any rate, thanks for the tips! I'm definitely going to explore those options. _________________ Basil — '88 Dove Blue Westy. |

Stop whining, open the door, disassemble and when you get to that bloody screw remove it and install a bolt, in the future you can reach a wrench up and adjust it. _________________ ABYC marine master technician , EX European auto technician, new business- EASTCOASTWEST , custom work on campers, only systems, no mechanical |

here are photos for you.
tighten the screw, since you have the wing window out, A bolt will be easier to tighten and loosen when the window is back in.
It pinches on the lower pivot:
and if you want full range on the later models, tap out the limiting pin here - then you can open the wing fully like in a bay bus:

YES!!!! I've seen threads cover the tighten up part but this is the first I've seen to get a later model window to open further. Wind and bugs at my face, here I come! |

Yes. The Sea Cow has a set.
A couple of days ago, I was on the highway doing 65 mph when a semi passed causing turbulence. The driver's side extension arm shot off like a bullet ricocheting around.
It needs a bigger lip on the outer side. Maybe?
Anyway, it works great for 98% of the time. For the other 2%, protective eyewear and an athletic cup are recommended! |

I found this at Home Depot on Sunday. It's plastic so it doesn't mar the painted finishes, and it's cheap--I think it was $5. They are just under $4 on Amazon.

Here'a a picture of how I was able to tighten mine. The screw had not fallen out but was disengaged from the threads. I wedged a screwdriver against the head of the screw and used a set of locking pliers to hold the assembly together. I then was able to use a set of needle-nose locking pliers (not shown) to grip the screw head and turn the screw to thread it in and tighten it. This did not require removing the window.

I got a pair of these plastic printed wing window holders on Etsy, and they work fantastic! They clip in and then when i’m not using em they just sit on the dash or in the glovebox during the winter… it amazes me what people can do with those printer things
