Since the frame was solid and most crossbraces were fine (3 needed repair) we used 1/8" plate for the floor. My plan was to make the floor as strong as possible and then tie the body to it. The steel floor extends to the outer edges of the body skin and is tied to the inner vertical ribs. I also used fiberglass "long and strong" to patch up smaller holes. Rustoleum gloss black helps seal the whole area..should last a good long while in the dry Colorado climate

The floor graft went very well, got the seat tabs just right and a reclaimed seat(next time..paint just drying). Nice to be able to sit down and work on other things w/o fear of jagged rust wounds.

Wow!! It has all its glass and all the pop-outs are functional! The bottoms of the window frame had plenty of rust through, I used Epoxy-sculpt ( widely used by metal artists for detail work), it bonds really well to rust..takes about a week to dry.The steering column had a nasty bash on the thread that took 5 hrs with a thread file to repair. Now the wheel is firmly attached and usable.Parcel tray worked out well.

Hey!! Bumpers,Lights,emblems such progress, The lower nose was toast, but frame was good, so we tacked some small diameter square tubing to the frame ends and then slowly/ carefully bent a 5" wide sheet of 3/16 plate steel to make a lower nose. This gave us a super strong Base that we directly welded bumper brackets to and custom bent industrial front bumper w/cool old school "Cats Eye" safety light. Still need to come up with a wiper system

Rear bumper brackets are home made square tubing and a pipe bumper, old emergency light will be an additional brake light. Tail lights are mini-bullets into custom housings (the original holes are still fine). Lower corners were completely wasted so these are 72 Bay window corners(don't be hatin"), I will grind off the paint and apply muratic acid to let the rust catch up, Inside I have a Bay tank and safety firewall installed. managed to read both vins after careful rust removal, that was worrying me. All doors are now working.

Rocker panel is stainless steel from an AMC Concord donor, We added some "nerf" bars below that for some protection in its maiden trail bash voyage. The top was badly pitted and had a few holes, fiberglass fit the bill. Still needs another coat. Now its time for wiring/brakes and rehabing a 40HP for power. I want it on the road by summer.

It's good see you breathing some new life into this old bus most people would have parted. I think I looked at this one when it was for sale on here, but thought it was too far away. Then I seen how far you traveled for it and I felt a little ashamed because I live in WV . Good luck and keep up the good work.

truth be told I was a bit worried about car dollying this Bus for 1800 miles after I saw it in person (That frame BETTER be good). It has been a strange project, I have never taken on anything so rusted out..it could easily gobble up thousands of dollars. I had some parts on hand,traded for some some,and bought a few to keep the budget under control. Now I can see the end and it will be a cool trail-bash bus that can be enjoyed. Colorado is the perfect place to use a bus like this..good times to be had. I have learned so much about early splits, that has been a personal reward for me. This Bus would have been cut up more than likely. Next its the rusty Iowa SC..maybe that one gets lowered!

Well its time for this bus to go to a new home. Hard to believe its been 10 years. As usual life got in the way, so I never got to deck out the inside. however it did turn into a fun drivable machine. The logos took some serious sleuthing and the mascot was only barely present with the repaint, the OG Dove Blue was damaged beyond enjoying ( thus the partial re-paint). Probably the last Split I'll ever do.
