Hi All
I just purchased a used VW trike. 1600 dp engine. 3 speed auto stick
Now my questions is
1) How do u use the 3 speed auto stick correctly. I heard u can use 2nd gear to start off and 3rd gear for higher speeds.
Low is used really to start out quickly, or for snow.
1st Gear is used up to about 45 MPH
2nd Gear is for highway driving.
Is this correct?
2) I know I have to check the engine oil. The last owner said he used
20/50 oil. Now for the auto stick ( torque converter) is it the same as
automatic transmission? What type oil to use.
Thanks for your help on this.
Joe
I can post pic within the next few days. I picked up the trike in KS and drove it to Colorado ( 525 plus miles).. It now feels kinda rough to ride and feels it wants to stall. I have a mechanic looking at it within the next few days. |

Well I took the trike to the mechanic because it seems to spatter and not running right. He took a brief look at at and said it may be a couple of things. Since I picked up the bike in Ks ( elevation 821 ft) compare to
mmy home elevation ( 3935 Ft) this may be a factor. He also talked a bit about the carb and timing and will make adjustments on Thursday to see if it will help.
From the prior post I found where it said to run it and 2nd and 3rd speed... Well did that today and I must admit it did well. |

mechanic adjusted the timing and carb. Running better. But I think he may have set the idle to low. When I am at a stop light seems to want to shut down.
Had to change the fuel pump out last weekend. Thought i did not have enough fuel but that was not the case. After the change over to the new pump u can feel the difference. Ran around town today and had no issues other then the low idle. Going to see if I can get it adjusted this week. |

Well the electric fuel pump I have on has a 5.5 - 9 PSI. Several mention it is to much PSI and only need 2-3 PSI. Mechanic will look at it on Thursday to see if he can put the stock fuel pump on. |

Neat trike !
Looks like it'll run nice and smooth and stable on the highway.
Since you have a semi-auto trans, which is actuated by several vacuum lines which can effect idle if leaking. You probably should have your mechanic test each line and replace the ones that look questionable.
Good insurance for sure.
Luck,

Idle speed adj same as any other vw carb, u cansee a screw against a step in a plate controlled by choke. Turn the screw in to get around 800rpms or up slightly, test and get it where u want it. Trans fluid cheked by the fluid cap on tank, has attached long indicator. |

Joe-
When starting from a stop to a go, I found that it is best (especially in traffic) to start in L (low) gear, then cycle to first, then second. I have noticed that also, even in a 25 mph zone, going from L to 1st to 2nd really helps keep my rpm's low and my engine a lot cooler. It is also best to not stay in gear while at a stoplight. Also it takes a lot of stress off of your trans/brakes. Make sure that the adjustment in the shift lever is accurate, you want to be able to feel a smooth 'roll' from gear to gear, without the car lurching everytime you shift.
As for your oil, I usually use a non-synthetic 10w-30, keeps her nice and cool...But I guess it really depends on the weather around where you live.
Hope that helps! _________________ 1969 Type 1 Autostick - Roulette
