What years where the bay versions of these trucks made? Did they ever have Type 4 engines? I've searched around but can't seem to find this info. _________________ air-cooled or nothing for me

They began in '68 with the T-1 engine. They stopped importing them to the U.S. around '70-'71 I think. Canada kept getting them though and they were always sold in Europe. They did come with T-4's though not common and not in the U.S. |

Pickups were made during all years of the bay window "chassis": 1968 - 1979.
And, technically, it's not that "they stopped importing them" in 1971. It's that the 25% tariff (the so-called chicken tax) was imposed on German trucks, including pickups and panel vans, imported into the US. That stupid tariff is still in place to this day.
So, they did get imported, in very small numbers and in special circumstances, but not by dealerships. They can still be imported, but be prepared to pay the chicken tax! _________________ John

71 was the last year for Canada as well, most of the rest of the world could still get them in 72 with either motor. Interestingly we have Vanagon and Eurovan trucks here but not many.
I dream of a 72 DC with a type 4, great heat and lots of power.

Why a '72 in particular? Would not any '72-'79 do? _________________ John

That pretty well sums it up, I don't hate late buses but I really like early ones and the 72 has nearly all the early charm with most of the late upgrades, best of both worlds you could say. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

But the '72 has an early nose and a late ass. Don't hate on the '72. |

I agree with you busdaddy. It is my mission to get a DC and put a Type 4 in it. It couldn't be that hard could it? |
It's really not that hard. My '78 DC had that done to it. You'll need an FI tank (with the return port), a fuel pump, and the FI gear with the 2.0-L Type IV. You're on your own as to mounting the ECU, but that is not too hard to find room for.
The hard part is finding the pickup to work on.
Remember that with the '72, you don't get the engine hatch. (J/K) I do miss having an engine hatch sometimes. _________________ John

Wow I didn't think this thread would be so popular. I would like to get a DC someday. And I already have all the things you mentioned laying in my basement. My fabricating skills are pretty good too. I guess I'll keep looking. _________________ air-cooled or nothing for me
