I have a set of springs I pulled out of my '85 tintop - I'm trying to identify them, to make sure I have what I think I have.

I remember seeing a chart somewhere that showed the color codes for each spring for each model (The colored band around one of the coils).

The springs I'm looking at are (theoretically) the tall '85 springs. My '85 was pretty tall - 17.25" at each corner stock.

Front springs: light-brown stripe painted on them
Rear: Sky blue stripe

Anybody know the chart I'm talking about?

The Brick Yard has the chart you're looking for: http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpecific/T3/info/springs.htm

Brickyard info does not show all springs. For example, my '82 diesel westy has 2 white stripes, middle of spring.

The IG16 wiki has a little bi more info, http://www.ig-syncro16.de/wiki/Federn, but even that one is incomplete.

Thanks for the responses - the Brickyard link is very helpful. Very Happy Very Happy

The chart I remember seeing was very detailed, it went year-by-year. I thought I saved it! I usually bookmark unusual stuff I run across... anyway.

The one in german... I didn't see anything.

Really? I don't see any mention of a single blue or single brown stripe on either list.

Brickyard does not list any spring measurements or dimensions, the IG16 wiki does. That could be useful for the OP

OP, try IG16 link again,

Okay, that link worked, and that's very similar to the chart I saw, which was in English.

Very solid information. Google Translator is your friend! Many thanks.

The only reference I find for 85 in the ETKA I only find 2 stripes painted the colors above:

For front with brown I only find:

(12) 253411105A
coil spring / F 24-F-110 635>>
/ ambulance JOKER,CARAT
253411105A 952

2 paint marks / use for: / brown paint marks
brown 1,2 /

for rear with blue is:

(1) 255511105C
coil spring
/ 255,256
255511105C 952

2 paint marks / use for: / blue paint marks
blue 1,2 /
(1) 255511105C

coil spring
/ 253,254:
255511105C 952

2 paint marks / use for: / blue paint marks
1,2 blue / M15,M16,M17 ambulance JOKER

NOTE: I looked at other years too and only a few have a single strip and that is yellow. In other words just about all springs in the VW parts catalog show 2 stripes per spring. I recently bought some used Carat springs and they followed what was stated in the ETKA. I do not know what springs you have.

Let me explain what the ETKA is saying. For spare parts, VW doesn't care to stock ALL the minor variations of springs used in original vehicle production. They stock 1 variation and tell you to use it for whatever fitments it is close enough to. So they make a spare part spring with 2 brown marks and tell you to use it to replace any original spring that had either 1 or 2 brown marks. Same with the blue. Simple enough.

Once upon a time a little bird told me that when you make a batch of springs they all turn out slightly different. So the manufacturer tests them and discards any that are too far off. The rest get sorted into 2 or 3 grades within the allowable range. All are very similar but ideally you don't want to use a spring on the right side that is at one end of the range and a spring on the left side that is at the other end of the range. So you grade the springs within the range into sub-ranges and mark them so that when the new vehicle is assembled the springs are a closer match. 1 paint mark for 1 sub-range, 2 paint marks for the next sub-range,.......

Mark
