An appeal for help, yet again, from all you T-3 gurus out there: My 64 Squareback has a single carb engine that has the number TS208416.

I know I have a Canadian model car, but according to the archives the engine number should start between 0441... and 0477… if it had been replaced with a later engine than it should start T0xxx… But TS? Also, the car has 59,000 miles on it, can’t see them replacing the engine.

I know that there was a TS model in Canada that had something to do with the dealerships, but has anyone heard of a TS numbered engine?

I can't find one listed for any VW, T-3 or other... Anyone ideas on what I have here? Think

Thanks,
Bob

Might be a replacement. It almost looks as if the "T" is slightly different than the rest. I'm wondering if the "S" might even be an "8". Looks like it could be on my monitor. Even then, makes no sense.

I thought the S could be an 8 as well, but I took a really good look at it, and it's not, its certainly an S. It is slightly different then the other 8 in the number as well.

The numbers are now stamped on the wrong case half...and you can definitely see where the originals where scuffed completely from the other half.

You're right. Interesting. So, would VW have done something like that if it were a replacment or rebuild? If not, why would someone go through the trouble of changing and re-stamping an engine?

"Crate" engines came with a case code and then a blank area, where the tech would stamp the number with a special set of stamps that were kept in the parts dept.

Same with floor pans.

ok, so then, assuming it was a replacement that was later stamped by a VW tech. What's up with the number? Where did that come from? is there a list of replacement numbers? Why wouldn't they have used the OG number? Does anyone else have or have ever seen a TS?

It should have been stamped with the original engine number.

Club VeeDub in Australia has a pretty cool chart showing every VW engine code, sadly no TS to be found.

Cool resource though…

I'd love to get at it, but its 200 miles away...and I can only visit, for now.

I wish I knew for certain that it was a factory original engine though... its a bit of a mystery. It seems to me there's a lot of things not known about these early Canadian cars.

The car has all the S gear (wrap-around dash, pax door lock, chrome), plus the Canadian stuff (gas heater, no side markers), so if this single carb engine is original, then that would make it an E for certain. Too bad Wolfsburg doesn't give out engine numbers anymore!

It could have been rebuilt or taken apart at some point in the past.

A lot of machinists stamp whatever they will remember on cases, doesn't mean what they stamp anyone else will know/interpret correctly

If it's like my E engine then there will be N stamped all over the case behind the flywheel.
maybe it's the vain mechanics initials Laughing

did the car have a TS badge on it?

Car didn't have a TS badge on it as far as I know, no signs of anything applied to the right side of the hatch anyway. There are two holes for what I assume would be the E script, and I understand the the S script had the same post locations, so either would fit.

Where did you see the Ns stamped into the case?

Also, I recall something about a second location for T3 engine numbers as well...does anyone know if this is true and where it would be?

Well, I finally managed to get the car here in October. I’ve started to have a good look at what I have, but with no heat in the garage yet I won’t be doing much to her in the next few months.

Tried scraping off some of the re-spray, it comes off pretty easily, I hope to be able to take it all back the the original birch green.

I peeled off the ugly red and black snap-on seat covers and found this underneath. Just like opening a present.

SMS are sending me a sample of cloth they have produced which might be a match.

I also found this on the floor in the back seat (car hasn’t been touched since 1975). Bingo card and a ticket for a draw from a gas station in Happy Valley, Labrador. Buy $2.00 worth of gas for a chance to win…. These days that would hardly fill a Pepsi bottle!

long road ahead, but should be lots of fun!
