It's time to put a horn on my Gt , but i can't find any info , or where the wire goes and come.
The steering column didn't come with a steering wheel, I have a VW after market with one wire (SCATT) but no clue witch color wire to look after.
The ground wire going thru the center is long gone, since the steering column was modified, the only solution I have right now will be "wireless remote"
Any help ..... |

Horn wiring is so simple.... All you need to do is ground shaft and run a wire up the center of shaft... A ground strap around flex coupling will ground shaft ... A couple of wraps of wire around shaft to keep it from pulling tight and snapping... Some sort of contact or horn button adapter kit for steering wheel....
On old BAJA built I reworked I used one of these mounted in center of wheel and just put screws in to steering wheel....

Not sure if this is what you are looking for...

Free Buggy.....
Excellent diagram! Thats how I wire my horns. No loops.
The only comment is that rarely do you need the rubber grommets as the column is usually through just glass (or maybe a steel support attached to glass) and therefore not grounded.
You can also use a relay triggered from the negative signal from the column if your horn is a single tab style that is grounded by its mounting tab and uses a postive signal. |

Only issue with this system is if you have after market turn signal switch (Peterson 500 or VSM 900 or Chinese crap) that requires a ground to operate pilot lamp in switch it will permanently ground column and horn will blow all the time.... Solution then is to run a separate (additional) ground wire to TS switch and insulate switch from column...
With tachometer and turn signal switch and headlight dimmer switch hanging on column this method sort of become impractical....

Ok, I've got a manx on a 63 pan with an aftermarket horn switch mounted to the column behind the turn signal switch. I don't know what steering column was used. I assume it was from the 63 donor. I'd much rather have the horn in the original location on the steering wheel. I have a grant style steering wheel. How do I wire this up.

This method works because most GRANT horn buttons are a switch that connects wire up center of tube to column (other half of horn circuit)...
The column is insulated from steel body in BUG, if you have column completely mounted in fiberglass and is not grounded to chassis it should not be problem to use this scheme..
I happen to use my grand horn button to operate a horn relay, but whatever works...

So in that scenario, I don't need to wind extra wire around steering shaft because it GPS directly to steering box? |

Is the switch on the lever a three wire? Power in and two power outs? _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

With that three wire, it will be two pole, one constant wire will connect to one temp wire until you click it again. Then the constant wire will be connected to the other temp wire until it is clicked again.
The horn will be on constant untill the switch it clicked again. If that is OK with you, it will work. Lot of clicking to do a "beep, beep". _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Do you have the rubber donut between your column and your box?
If you do you run the wire from a bolt that is connected to the box side of the donut up through the hole into the center of the steering wheel. This hooks to your horn button. Then from a spot on the outer tube in the front of the front "firewall" (near the master cylinder) either hook up a wire to the tab that should be there (or attach a wire with a small screw) and run it to the horn.
If your horn has only 1 tab for the power (it pulls the ground from its mounting tab) you will need to run a relay. |

That's exactly what I needed!! Thank you!!!!
Yes I do have the donut, I was also wanting to replace it since it's falling apart, but I can't get the little pins out from the nuts. Any ideas on that? I know that's a different thread, but...
Thanks, John |

If I cannot get the cotter pin out of a bolt because they are too rusty, I just use two wrenches and power through them. The castle nut will shear off the pin and come right on off. I either use a punch and clean the left over pin out of the bolt or use new bolts with a nyloc nut. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Not a problem switch is just a contact that the two brown wired connect to (stock harness).... You can wire them any way you want....
Here is some options on how to wire a horn....
I would use a relay equipped circuit because horn draws some amps and will cause premature failure of switch contacts....

If I connected/spliced the two 'temp' wires together will it work as one temp wire?
essentialy only jucing the wire while switch is held down? |

No. Because one temp wire will always be connected to the constant wire, the horn will blow constant.
But you can wire in a relay like Dale shows above and it will work. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class
