For some reason that last post with a message to Stuart is buried in the middle of his quote. .??? _________________ If you only have one tool in your tool box, and it's a hammer, pretty soon, everything looks like it needs to be whacked!

Thats a good score at 850. The interior looks very nice. |
I have been looking for a good picture that shows exactly where to put my jack stands on my 78 bus, but can't find one. I've asked on the forum and people have explained where to put them. I guess I would feel better if I had a picture to see where they go. I must be a visual learner. Do you have such a picture?
Btw I always wished my sons would have restored a car with me, but they aren't gear heads. Your Dad is lucky.

I agree with thewalrus on the keeping it air-cooled, I love that OG shit, son! But I also strongly feel that if a water-cooled engine is going to better suit his needs then a water-cooled engine he should have. Then you have a type 4 engine to clean up and rebuild and have for later as a spare/backup. Plus, if it's got a 411 engine in it, it's not 'stock' anyway. Resale value is only relevant when you are ready to sell.
With all the deals Stuart seems to stumble into, I'm sure a spare type 4 would be nice to have around! _________________ -Tony

like a boss.
Edit: that 72 non walkthru didnt work out, but that high top still might...! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

big list of things to add here, and i have yet to get pictures on out handyworks....
new fuel pump (45 from FLAPS)
rewired the dash yesterday, found ONE broken wire, and moved about 6 wires... took alot less time then i thought. and bently has quite a few errors....that didnt help. only use that book for the basic reference, then i use my own judgement...
got a new piece of plywood for the floor, and will be getting that installed today, along with some more "window flashing" stuff ( dont think it helps like dynamat would, but the stuff is very cheap, so better than nothing)
took it to anacortes last tuesday, with NO break downs...only three issues: it got VERY cold when the sun dropped because the top was off, so a giant hole in the roof....then dad killed the clutch turning right before the freeway, and then in his attempt to restart the bus, forgot to turn the key while pushing the starter button, so it wouldnt start for a sec, till he turned the key....i wasnt there for this, i had just turned the corner in maisy, so i missed the fun... and three, we had no dash lights, so he had to follow me once it got dark.
Dash lights now work great, got all of them working with the 2.3 watt bulbs, and all the indicators work. the key switch was bad, and i had bought a new one a few weeks back, i installed that yesterday as well, when i was rewiring the dash.
fun find: the rear defrost switch has a ground pole on it, and that pol came loose, and gravity set it right on top of the power wire to the switch. so, naturally, it kpt popping fuses. i found the short, and for now, the defrost is dissconnected at the window, so i put the power on the other side, and left the wire going to the window off, and the switch lights up, but doesnt work, and wont pop fuses for the time being. we are gonna replace the switch, then attach the window later, and see if we cant make it work
the power wire for the wipers was soldered onto the lower fuse tab on fuse number 9 iirc. an inline fuse in a a stock fuse holder (stolen from backup lights or similar) was on it, and the wir was cut and spliced a few tires. i traced that to the switch, found a small amount of black wire, and then a cut, and then the rear defront wire had a dual wire on one spade connector, and a cut as well. i cut the spare off, and cleanly attached the two wires together, a viola! i have a fuse wire from defront, also powering my wipers! i love electrics! (that was the only broken wire)
replacing the key also took the starter buttons purpose away, so thats coming out...
the AC unit with the fans is on the floor in the garage, and i need a proper wiring diagram and more info before im ready to put it back it (i want to use the fans)
QUESTION! where does the stock fuse block sit? ours was wrapped up and over the bracket that the steering column sits on, and was behind the gauge cluster. i would like to put it somewhere solidly mounted, instead of hanging, like it is at the moment...
also for the front turn signals both working (one bulb had a bad ground, and the two bulbs didnt match, one was amber) got those working, and cleaned up the left tail light, the right is on the list today to get done next.
things to buy next list:
pop top seals
windshield seal
sliding door seal
engine seal
heater control knob colored knobbie thingys (red and blue rubber parts)
sun visor clips
rear defrost switch
thats just the immediate...more is there to do, but thats whats next to buy...when funds allow anyways...
im planning on doing some serious mods to my headlights (projectors and HIDs) and i will be giving my dad my H4s if i like what i end up with (most likely) so he will get that upgrade soon too
also took it out to monroe yesterday, full of bikes for a buddy. took back roads to avoid traffic, and me and dad had a great time being lost and guessing where to turn, and we ended up right where we needed to be go figure. one problem the whole trip, the high beam switch decided to stop working after i messed with it. relay works fine, switch on the column, part of turn signals, stopped working right. its on the list...
thats all for now, ill try and add more in later. and some pictures! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Great work Stu!
You may want to consider treating the plywood before you put it down. Couple coats of a good sealer to prevent molds or Warping in the future. _________________ Special Thanks to:

ill try n send a pic of it to ya...its not a very pretty one...its called a "vista" is what the guy said...its a weird custom boxy one...not a adventurewagen (pretty) rounded type. but, the 2.0 FI engine in it (7 and the 5/6 rib will be a nice swap into this 72, or into mine if needed...so i figure the trade will be worth it. we have zero into this fiat, as we parted out another car, and sold the extra things we had and came out on top, so anything we get is profit, and a bus is good profit me thinks.

Dad absolutely LOVES his new toy....mom calls it his midlife crisis...and shes just as involved as he is...shes planning the curtains, and they are both excited to road trip together to go see my sister play soccer for her senior year of college....big plans! once the interior is done, we have to install the canvas, do the door seals, the pop top seals, and eventually, he wants to paint it. red bottom, white top half, white pop top. cant wait for that! after that....who knows...its whatever breaks, we fix it and keep goin!

LOVE that idea...thanks for the suggestion! most of the old interior wood is water damaged, so treating it would serve a very good purpose. ill let dad know cause he wants to install, or at least, cut the wood for the floor tonight, so he can get the rest of the interior back in! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

some quality time with dad resulted in a huge progress on the 72 bus 5 hours later, the floor is cleaned, painted, and the plywood cut out, and nearly ready to go back together, sound deadened and all. also, my extra LED dash lights got installed, which help dad out more than it would have helped me. works great!
i got pics of everything, and i will have them posted here in the next half hour... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Puzzle time! these two pics were taken right after each other, and nothing was changed. what is wrong?
we cleaned, and then primered the floor...black was all we had. also wire brushed the rust patches. repainted the step by the door white, just in case...
some window flashing to kill some of the tin can vibrations. its not dynamat, or even close, but gets the job done...much better than nothing at all...
Test fitting the plywood. then staining it:
The new canvas:
Grandma and grandpa took the rest of the fabric home to duplicate the childs cot, and the upper bunk cot. so the fabric will all match, and be new
Need to get some new seals:
Wiring and engine shots:
Fuel pump:
engines is mostly the same, two new heather tubes added now, and wiring from button start is gone now (after pic was taken) so theres a few less things to worry about back there...and that ford relay can now come out (will tomorrow) because the key switch starts the car without it...
Simplified:
bit blurry, sorry. all new fuses on a brass wire brushed fuse block, all bent so they hold fuses tightly. works perfect now
HINT! that red looped wire has to do with the puzzle.....
gotta find a wiring diagram before this can go back in....
Some cool night shots:
The LED dash lights. and yes, the clock light works fine. its just not nearly as bright (different style bulb than the LEDs i have)
More pics and the answer shortly... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Electric washer pump:
not in the bently, (oh dear god, the world is ending) and looks to be AC related...anyone? only other wire this color is for brights indicator...not connected at all. its by the e brake area
engine shots, tell me if you see a problem:
that relay comes out tomorrow, its not needed!
the rag is to catch the oil spray, until the air cleaner is connected, and the hose attached.
throttle return spring...dont ask...
location of the fuel pump....the red wire comes out tomorrow too...thankfully...
the twist tie dealio was the power wire for the push button start...its gone now
there is trailer wire all over the place randomly, and not in a straight path...i gotta track it all down, but i guess it was used to tie in the busses lights for towing it behind a truck or RV, as the huge hitch on the front suggests it has been...
and more at the front...
and the answer!
the new headlight switch comes with 6 wires, a gray wire is the extra, snip that off, and you are left with 5 wires. a red, a red with black, a yellow with black, a black, and a brown. the black is tied to the key and only gets power when the key is turned. i had just traced wiring for the headlights, and had a epiphany. dad ALWAYS leaves my lights on, because they are not on a buzzer, or tied into the key. solution? the black with came with one main wire, and a secondary smaller wire off that main spade....so i simply routed it over to the headlight switch, and stole the power wire from that and put it in a dead are on the fuse block (constant 12v) and now the headlight switch is on switched 12v power, so the lights CANNOT be left on when the key is off. dad loves the idea, and i know it will save him more than once from a dead battery. at least until i get a second battery installed to run all the extras off of, then ill re-wire it to constant power, on the second battery
hope that made sense.
let me know your thoughts on this mod...im curious.
ill try and get more pics tomorrow as we go. plans are to get the wood paneling all sanded down, and finish installing the plywood, then get the seats back in if we can, then throw down some scrap carpet for basic sound deadening, and comfort.
also, trying to convince the rents to take it camping ASAP while the weather is nice....with no canvas, weather is important, and they gotta break it in soon! washington park is looking like the place to go this year....anyone want to join us? _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

BIGGEST UPDATE YET!!!
we decided on a name:
Sticky!
the accelerator pedal has been sticking and giving us fits, so we came up with "sticky" the bus!
added bonus, it fits on a custom licence plate _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Time to pull that whole thing out and grease the cable, and most likely buy the pedal rebuild kit. Unless northwestern magic has protected your pedal assembly as well. _________________ KK4NTP

got a fair amount done today...finished the flashing material....aka "sound deadener"....got a bit of extra reflectix laying around, and used it....then got the new panels all cut, stained, and installed!
we were driving to the dunn lumber because home depot was expensive...and randomly passed a plywood shop! found ourselves a nice selection of wood, including a 4x8 and a 5x5 peice of the thin 1/16th or whatever wood used on the panels! the 5x5 would fit the cealing, and 4x8 everywhere else, but 2 sheets did the whole bus, and left a good amount of extra. oh, the best part? a 4x8 sheet is 15 bucks.....5x5 was 21...so we did the whole bus for uner 40 bucks. and we got some other wood to fix part of the upper cabinet. if your interested, Midway plywood i think was the name, on hwy 99, and mukilteo speedway, by the uhaul up there....
on to the pics!
we reused all the ceiling peices, and the rearmost two skinny parts:
the old drive side panel:
kick panels, and the sliding door (slider door seal is bad, leaked alot)
all the new panels, cut and sanded
the plywood for the floor, treated now (thanks for the suggestions curtis!) and the headliner:
our atempt at wood kick panels was nice....but they both broke on onstall trying to flex them....
all stained and ready to install!
the headliner part came out a very deep color
paneling
pieces for the headliner...a bit of steel wool for about 20 seconds, and they came ALIVE!
a bit outta order, but the sound deander final job:
sorry for the sideways pics...
we wanted it a bit quieter for driving it around to the store (how we got the plywood)....and so we used some old carpet to kill the noise a bit!
turns out we have already put 300 miles on this thing! page one show 85619 or so on the ODO, and it now reads 85912 ish....so crazy how the miles can just roll by
moms gonna kill me, but a sneak peak at the curtains we have planned....moms way of helping us out
