Hi, I have a 72 with the same looking A/C set up.
Also, where did you end up getting your replacement pop top canvas from?
Thanks |

We homemade ours, but its too small, id recommend a busdepot or gowesty one, but spend the extra and get a high quality, as the low quality ones really suck. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

so the motor on this, i found to have a fairly large issue. i found the distributor drive gear to have centrifugal play in it, an amount that tosses my timing near 10* of play.
i took the drive gear out, and it has both shims under it, and the gears both dont show major signs of wear, but yet it definately has play.
help?
am i seriously looking at a worn out brass gear on the crank? i am NOT rebuilding this motor...if its done, its done and im finding a nice subaru doner...
would like to push this motor through next summer if i can.... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

I thought it was only supposed to be one shim under the dist drive gear. Better check yer manuals. _________________ '72 Elm Green Deluxe |

I thought it was only supposed to be one shim under the dist drive gear. It actually has three bumps that would make the gear jump if you had more than one( at least mine did). Better check yer manuals. _________________ '72 Elm Green Deluxe |

To confirm the timing variation is in the dist drive.
Pull the dist and use a big screwdriver and twist the dist drive gear clockwise and counter clockwise and see what you get.
i took the drive gear out, and it has both shims under it, and the gears both dont show major signs of wear, but yet it definately has play.
Someone has shimmed the drive gear. This is ok. It is an old Wilson tip. It keeps the dist drive gear from riding up and down and causing timing variations.

Maybe the drive gear. You can try to replace that first.

Play like this?

Have you actually observed the timing scatter? What distributor? Make sure your spring is seated properly, mine worked its way down once; don't let that happen. If DVDA, try an SVDA and report back.

The bus is officially parked till a motor swap can be done.
Clutch is slipping badly, multiple oil leaks, suspect a valve pulling through the head, and a worn distributor drive gear. Next step is a fresh engine and trans, and unless i find a cheap useable motor ready to swap In, its getting a subaru. The condensor has the mounts already, so no a whole lot to it besides cost and time. Its been fun Mr. sticky, till next time.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but the tallest snow covered peak on the left is Mt. Stuart...Stuart. _________________ 1970 Westfalia w/ Adventurewagen Top |

The Teanaway valley is a great place to bus drive. Many great options for bus pilots to consider. The FS road that dead ends at esmerelda basin trailhead is a short but fun drive. From there, its five miles round trip hike to longs pass where Mt. Stuart is all up in your face.
I'd be down for a Teanaway trip once I have brakes again. Time to start selling stuff. _________________ 1970 Westfalia w/ Adventurewagen Top |

just wanted to sum up this thread. the bus was driven onto the truck today. sort of a semi sweet bitter sweet kind of thing. as we drove our final block together, the oil came on and stayed on, and was on throughout the entire loading process for about 5 minutes. finally went off once it was on the truck. got to drive it up on to the truck myself, since he was throwing a fit and barely wanted to make it up the slope.

I'm sorry for your loss. Is it going to Europe? And why didn't he have you put it on the bottom of the trailer? _________________ 1978 Delux Campmobile

Such a sweet video!
It probably wouldn't fit on the bottom.
This way, it can leak oil all over some soft-top Corvette.
