So, there it is.
You say "yes, that is a pin"
(thank you if did not follow that with "pinhead")
It looks identical on the other side btw.
That little bastard has to be punched out of there, of course.
Couple of things make me curious about this one.
Seems to have a brassy coloration to it, that wouldn't be a brass pin would it?
Is this supposed to be a reusable pin ?
Can it be knocked out with a standard punch or do I need a brass drift ?
Is it directional? Can I punch it out either way?
...so many questions for a little pin that I never saw before, and why would they use a pin in this spot anyway? What's wrong with a bolt? _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

use a brass drift, do not use a steel one. You don't want to mushroom the end.
it was a steel pin in my van, and it is re-usable.

It is a steel pin but the coloring looks like the R word(rhymes with dust) . It is 10mm x 22mm if you need a new one. They can be driven out in either direction but you can usually get better hammer blows driving it in from the backing plate towards the tranny.
I just use a steel pin punch about the same size and a single jack hammer to drive them out. A brass drift pin wouldn't be a bad thing though. |

mine popped out easy when I did my rear brakes by banging on the rear backing plate with a rubber mallet (i think? )

Those dowel pins are pretty hard, you won't bruise them using a flat-ended punch, just strike it with conviction, good and square with a #2 hammer. A soft drift will probably mushroom first! _________________ 1986 syncro twin-slider rhd, 3.2S Oettinger wbx6

Just got this little baby knocked out... I punched it from the front side > single strong blows with a big hammer did nothing. Then I tried fast repeated strong blows and it started to move... kept on doing that fast and strong and it came out.

I’m building up a new set of rear brakes on a new backing plate to replaced the rusted out originals. After driving out the dowel pins I got to wondering why they are there in the first place. The two hardened M10 bolts that fasten the brake pivot bracket to the hub casting appear to be sufficient to anchor the brake shoes against rotation. Maybe they were designed to be an assembly aid at the factory. I am thinking about leaving them out on reassembly. _________________ 1988 Vanagon
