Got the '78 running but ran into some problems. (Running but making noise. Possible stuck lifter, etc.. Has not run in 6+ years.) PO had put three cheap bolts in the fan. Turns out they were too long. PO fix is to add 4 to 5 washers to clear case.
(Should have removed them and replaced with correct bolts. But with no engine history just wanted to get it turning over. Spent the last few weeks getting FI system back to stock wiring condition.)
Bolts sheer at about 2k rpm. Clean up crank snout, new key and torque to spec, 13ftlbs and 23ftlbs with extra fan, bolts and hub from 1700.
Same result without sheered bolts. Keyway is trashed and crank snout is worse. Next step?
PO Bolts
Fix for removal of old hub. Ever tried to removed JB welded sheered bolt?
Old Hub and keyway vs. new 1700 unit.
What remained of the key. Dug it out and replaced with new key for 1700.
Had an old mechanic friend that said he fixed an harmonic balancer to crank snout on a V-8 once. Never found out how. Ideas?

| A new key and just enough JB Weld to fill all the voids. You don't have much to lose at this point. |

IMHO Something is stopping the fan or slowing the engine enough RPM instantly to snap the bolts and shear the key. That or the fan is so out of balance it is vibrating itself to death.
Your real question should be what is causing this rather than how do I fix it? Finding the cause comes before fixing it.
