Door is mounted, I will rebuild it later gotta wrap up other projects...
But first...I got side tracked...
You can see the color differance here, won't be an issue once I make another door.
I did get sidetracked with the my trick fridge...
tearing it down...ahh...nothing like ripping apart a new TF49
Door frame and new instert installed,
Stuff was too wet to reinstall the door lock, but i'll do that next time...It turned out pretty good.

While I was at it...I got my F35 in yesterday, I couldn't/wouldn't use the mounts for it so I made some new ones up, these will be powdercoated and dipped, I'll use a bolt that goes all the way through the top and backs another bracket I made up and that will get bolted or rivited to the metal.
Don't pay attention to the grey smears of epoxy glue
First try not a bad guess
I used my mill and made some bolt slots
I'm going to use 3 mounts to keep things stable...
Jig I used to keep things aligned correctly,
I'll play with position later....but you get the idea..

Well, today was a good and bad day.
Here you can see the awning brackets being braced inside, VERY stout...I could grab on to the mount and shake the whole van and not get any movement from the mount, I over sized the hole going through the van so the bolt doesn't make contact with the fiberglass/gelcoat, If you have ever seen a glass top age you always see spider cracks around bolts, I hope to avoid this issue by keeping the bolt away from coming in contact with the top.
No pix of the mount without the awning tube, I got pissed at this point when I opend the box containing my awning and this is where things went down hill...
This looks right...
I noticed I heard some rattling inside the tube when I installed the awning...looks like this was what was rattling...
Ugh.....backwards ? ?
This side the piece that holds the leg and support had a bunch of chips in the plastic so I guess its broke too..
Looks good tho, minus the dents in the case and broken shit.

Sucks about the Fiamma, but kudos on the build. Your mounting system is clever, and seems bomber! I have serious high top envy , and I am enjoying your build thread. Looking forward to the next installment. _________________ '85 Westy |

Let me also "me too" on this build project. I really like this option a LOT.
My tack would be a bit different course using a regular Syncro van and adding the top.
I rarely raise my Westy tops, but that is just an issue with a high top, is it?

loaded up the van today and went on a picnic with the fam
The cabinet holds alot, 3 chairs, my tote containing biolite stove and grill, wood pellets and random stuff..
Removed the old fridge, I am probably going to put my propex under here (hs2800) but will give it a little design thought...
squaring the corners, still need to take about an 1/8th of an inch on the sides..

Todays work,
Propex re-install, I didn't like the room it ate up under the rear seat...Credit goes to Jedi (Jay) for the idea and pictures to help stimulate ideas.
Hole to be cut
I'm sure one day we will regret butchering these cabinets
Not quite high enough here, comes in contact with the fridge...
Floor cut, gave me about 1/2''
Test fit...
Finish work is roughed in but you get the picture...

I should note I have 1x1 aluminum angle next to the arrows, exept on the bottom I used a couple scraps for some bracing for the lower cover.
Should keep the fridge in place
I also used some angle on the bottom to give the fridge lift, i'll get detailed pix of that when I get finish work complete. |

Here are a few more details on the propex install....after sending some of what i'm doing to westyventures to make sure i'm not going to fry things it was decided I should add some more protection...
Supports
Supports and I added some aluminum angle to act as a heat sheild
HVAC tape (3 layers)
1/4'' diamond plate
Layer of prodex
3 1/8'' hole, 3 layers of hvac tape
Made a fitting to pass through the two cabinets, I didnt want movement to wear a hole through th flex pipe
Gobs of hvac tape
I used some exhaust header wrap to keep some of the heat out of this dead space
Done for now
I'll post exhaust/intake info shortly... |

Dumb question - i take it that the Propex won't fit with the vent facing forward, instead of the circuitous route taken? Or done this way so that there is more separation between the fresh-air intake and hot-air exhaust?
Any fire-up yet, to see if that section of hose is going to create any (additional) noise?
Highly detailed work, as usual. _________________ '91 Syncro 16 Reimo Hightop Conversion, eTDI |

The HS 2800 is longer then the 2000 so this is the only way it fits.
No hot runs, LP tank out but its quiter then it was under bench... I assume cause of it being enclosed so much.
Once i get done sandblasting my tank and painted ill do a hot run and monitor temps. |

Looks great, although 2X the overkill I expected. Aluminum treadplate? Definitely should keep the keep away from the fridge. I wouldn't have worried so much about the ducting passing through the wall, that would have been fine. If anything just add a block to keep it from moving. But as is will be fine. I want to hit it with a decibel meter if I end up out there again soon as I a curious how quiet it might be tucked away there. What plan do you have for the small cubby to cover the ducting and make it usable again?
Another reason the heater can't be mounted the other way is the HS2800 will quickly melt it's own heater vent if placed on the heater end. You'd need a custom metal grille. Technically, with enough cutting and recessing into the wall cavity it 'could fit' but not recommended! |

I have db meter app, not sure how well it works compared to yours... But yes you should measure it instead
As for the cubby i plan on making a small false floor out of expanded metal to keep items from crushing the tube and once thats in place i plan on moving my solar controller, fuse box, shore charger and possibly a small inverter down the road (don't forget theres another compartment behind the outlet so i can stuff things there too) right now i have this stuff under my sink and im always paranoid about a skillet or something crushing my fuse box.
And wih my sink cabinet and rear bench freed up with some stuff I can whored more gear and cookware |
