Professional work with slider the Mod. Slider ends looks awesome.
Few things I like to know,
1.What color will slider have?
2.How do you plan to put back the Mud flaps.
3.Any reason for not using door switch or parking switch for the slider LED. |

Thanks, They are coming along...still have a lot of work to go though.
The sliders will be a slightly textured black to match the rest of the powder coating I've already done on the van.
At this point I'm planning on fabricating new mud flaps that will be mounted off the sliders, I'll install one on each side.
I want each slider on it's own switch so I can easily turn one side on if we want to use it while camping etc. I'm thinking about building a custom switch assy to mount in the van where I can not only control the slider lights but the roof lights that I will be installing on my upcoming custom safari basket build

Been working a lot lately so I haven't had a chance to work on the bus much. Did manage to get a little work done today though. Installed the new input and shift shaft seals. Now on to the starter.
I decided to install a Diesel TDI starter so I will have a reliable modern starter that will crank the 2.5L over without a problem, as a side benefit this starter is self supporting so you don't need to use the support bushing in the bell housing that is prone to wear.
I ordered a Bosch SR0408X starter and a Westy Ventures adapter plate, now to install them.
Starter and adapter plate.
Since I'm installing the setup in a Syncro the Diff Locker brackets need to be trimmed. I trimmed the brackets (at the red arrows) so they will clear the starter and powder coated them black.
With the adapter plate temporarily in place the starter is test fitted. You need to trim a small notch in the starter so the upper mounting plate nut has room to seat. (at red arrow)
Starter notched....
Installing the Diff lock brackets, here you can see why the notching is needed for clearance.
Another angle. Here the starter is bolted up tight, I applied a thin layer of Ultra Grey gasket maker to the mating surfaces to keep water out.
You need to notch the corner of the diff actuator to clear the edge of the starter.
Assembled, it's a tight fit but it all goes together.
Shift assy installed along with new rubber shift boots.
More to come

Will that starter work on a 2.1 WBX with a diff lock? |

Yes. He also now offers a syncro version that replaces the studs in the adapter with bolts making starter removal easier.
If I am ever in there again I am going to remove the studs and timesert the adapter to use bolts.
I had to remove the starter once at a rest stop and having those studs out of the way would have made life much easier.

Yep when you said it would be cool to have lights on the slider the gears started turning
I have a different version in mind already if I was to do it over again

Yup, definitely a good idea to do it over again.
Another good idea is to sell me version 1 to finance the do it over again model. |

Nice work as always! I've been planing on some sort of exterior lighting like that. Rock crawlers have wheel well lights so they can illuminate the corners at night while driving slow. Would be also nice to have extra light in a wheel wheel in case of night time repair.
I'd like to see some night time action shots when its done!
And I've been planning on using one of these http://www.cjponyparts.com/dome-lamp-dimmer-module-deluxe-1965-1973/p/DDLD/ to do puddle lights and interior lights (when I get time for more projects like that...). It might be pretty neat with your slider lights with a manual switch override. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Absolute "fab"ulous work. If it were me, these would make great running lights if dimmed for sure, but the bar is also perfect to run downlighting below the bar.
Deep blue lighting at night is not so intense and would be nice when side door opens, and/or to stay on, when slider is open with interior lights off, lighting the path area in a night camping setup, that is not overly bright and annoying.
Many do not recognize how effective and elegant reflective lighting is when you cannot see the bulbs. Especially intense LED bulbs.
I'm very impressed with the great fab work…wow. _________________ 1991 Tornado Red Vanagon Carat
