I have the 235's on Mercedes rims on the Van now. I love them, it rides so nice but one has two serious punctures. They are Michelins with 90% tread left. How big of a deal would it be to run the one 225? I found a used one on a Mercedes rim for a good price so I can just bolt it on and go if it won't cause serious problems.
Thank you,

tires MUST be the same size on the same axle
no question
front to rear can be different, side to side must be the same size _________________ lucy our westy

On a 2wd it isn't that big of a deal, but if you run it on a rear wheel, your differential will constantly be working and may eventually fail. You could run it in the front without problems but it'll probably bug you every time you look at it.
If the rest of your tires are at 90% I'd just buy a new matching tire to replace the damaged one. That's the right way to do it. |

On front this causes a pull on back it causes accelerated differential wear.
Bad move all around.
Tires should be same size, same make in axle sets for 2wd.
Tires should be same size, same make in all locations for awd vehicles...I'm anal enough to make sure I have a matching set from the same production run (info in dot stamp on every tire). Tire compounds and mould wear affect sizing greatly.
So in a 2wd you have some latitude, just not for what you're looking to do. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

...and if you measure to tires with the same dimension spec but from different brands, they will differ as well. |

Isn't that the whole point of the differential? Every time you turn the steering wheel, the differential is working. Has anyone ever seen a differential fail from use? _________________ '87 faux-Syncro Westy w/ 2.3l GoWesty WBX |

Extra tranny wear or your van pulling to one side for the cost of one tire? I would not do it.
Here is a nice page to compare tires:
http://vw.zenseeker.net/Wheels-TireSizing.htm
Revs per kilometer difference is 21.24(1.8%) _________________

Saying that specs are different than dimensions doesn't make sense. Porsche specs/VW specs/engineering specs are nothing but a series of dimensions, sizes, percentages, measurements, etc. |

i'd be interested to see what your insurance company would say
to be honest i'm astonished that some would consider using different size tires on the same axle
flame me if you must, i think it's laughable _________________ lucy our westy

I appreciate the help/advice/comments. I am not a big tire person here. When I buy a car vehicle I make sure the tires match and that they are good. If I run over something I take it in and get it repaired. I've only needed to buy a new set of tires once. I am not real familiar with the size ratio specs and didn't think a 225 and a 235 were much different.
I did get a matching single tire today for a good price so I am all set. The price of a brand new one was 5x more then the used one. I just can't afford to spend money like that.
