|
|
Is there a market for a used engine that needs a little work?
I have a 1.9 just pulled from our '84 westy, only 69k, but it has a head gasket leak... no external fluid loss, but rather exhaust gasses pushing into the cooling system. Not very serious, but we did see a pretty constant stream of bubbles in the overflow tank.
Rather than fix, we went with a Bostig turnkey. I have the engine pulled and wanted to see if the folks here thought it would be of use to someone or should I just send it to the scrapper. It ran like a top other than the bubbles, which caused the occasional overheating red light on decelleration as all the exhaust gasses would push the cooling fluid out of the expansion tank below the sensor.
Just looking for an honest opinion. If it has no financial value, I would have no problem in just "parting it forward". |

I have sold rebuildable cores for $375 in the classifieds easily.
GEX, JLP engines and a few others are always looking for cores. |

Don't sell them anything. They will just paint it silver and pawn it off on some unsuspecting person.
I'd scrap it before selling to crooks like GEX. _________________ Glenn

What they do with them is up to them.
I have sold many to them and Jake Lake.
I make marks on the cases and have had a few resurface over the years.
The ones I sent in where rebuilt and running well the last I heard.
I know both rebuilders have iffy reputations.
I dont want to see another core scrapped or used as a boat anchor.
As stated previously, not everyone can pop for a conversion.
But I do understand your reply. |

Great attitude. It's like selling Sudafed to people knowing they're gonna use it to make methamphetamine.
There are plenty of reputable businesses that will do the correct machining and turn them into reliable engines. Painting it silver, tossing parts in and selling it as rebuilt is not doing the community any good. some unsuspecting Vanagon lover will spend their hard earned money thinking they're getting a good deal. only to find out they've been robbed and you supplied the bullets. _________________ Glenn

I just finished rebuilding my 1.9L core with the 2200cc/96mm Pistons GoWesty kit and, so far, quite satisfied.
Total in (engine only) about $2800 (1500 to the machine shop) and balance on the kit, bearings, etc.

Hey Man,
I personally called Chris Corkins and GoWesty to ask if they wanted them, and I ain't talkin' one or two.
The last pallet to leave my shop have (9) 2.1 wbxrs on it.
They said no thanks.
All had AMC heads, perfectly spinning internals and just needed resealing.
If the rebuilder chooses to skimp and cheat, that is what the feedback forum is for here on the Samba....both parties have been discussed in depth over the years.
Anyone thinking a $1600 "rebuilt" engine will be on par with 10cent, GW, Rocky......com'on Man
Give me a break.
You get what you pay for.......period |

Surprising there are plenty of people that don't come to the Samba. And not all Samba members read the feedback forum before buying. And it's hard to ignore that full page color ads in Hot VW (i blame them also).
All you're doing is justifying your actions. Saying you want them to be put into service is not what GEX is doing. They'd are all doomed to failure, just that you and GEX are profiting from it. _________________ Glenn

So since everyone else is doing it, you justify you can do it also.
So let everyone know that it's Buyer Beware when dealing with you.
Glad you made that clear.
I guess we can get back to the original topic. _________________ Glenn

Yes, please! All the OP wanted to know was if it's worth trying to sell/give away a used WBX.
Don't like GEX? Fine. Simply refer folks to the GEX-bashing thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=92079 so they can be educated and draw their own conclusions. No need to continue the GEX banter in this innocent thread. _________________ ~Kamz

I didn't intend to light everyone up here guys... it 's Friday... two days of happy wrenching is ahead of us.
Kumbaya, y'all.
Edit: I probably will say my original intention was not to get the 1.9 in the hands of a rebuilder, but rather into someone's garage who needs a motor. It really doesn't need a rebuild, most likely with that mileage and proper coolant (which the records show it has had) just seals is all it needs.
I think my plan is to post it in the classifieds as a "best offer" and we'll leave it at that.
Thanks to everyone for the input. This community is one of the best out there when we're not trying to kill each other. |

I wasn't bashing GEX, I'm bashing someone that facilitates them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to salvage everything possible and hate to throw parts away that can do someone some good. If you don't know anyone that needs the parts, post an ad in the classified and offer them up for free. If no one needs them, store them if you can because sooner or later someone will need a part.
Just don't give them to someone who will profit from you generosity by selling them. _________________ Glenn

To the OP
I just sold a used 2.1 for $425.00. That included the water pump, injectors, intake manifold and throttle body. It also had AMC heads.

If I were buying a used WBX the single biggest thing I would want to know is the hot idle oil pressure. That, and the warm compression/leak-down.
If you have these pieces of information, you are much more likely to get top dollar for your engine.
That said, if you just want it to go to a good home, I totally understand the sentiment. _________________ 2004 Dodge/Mercedes Sprinter (Custom Camper)
