This is where you might want to look for a standard type 3, 3 screw headlight assembly. I only say that as I found that some of the parts used are type 3 parts. In fact when I rebuilt my car it got sealed beam headlights, and used Hella headlight buckets and parts to assemble them.

Yup, that would make sense. Fellow hobbyist has type 3 parts in his stash, I'll have to ask if he has these. Thanks for the hint.

Most of my parts are good or salvabeable and somehow I'd think Karmann uses type 3 parts where possible.

Project progresses nicely, most of the basic bodywork is done and it looks like a car again, but a ton of finishing and fitting has to be done before base paint.

BTW: I read your T34 restoration story and it was very good and gave us hints on many spots while working on the body. It has really interesting construction in many places like "WTF they were thinking with this" even if most of it is solid engineering.

Well ... hand built gives a lot of freedoms to designer.

I think I see some rust bubbles, but what a beauty. I always preferred this color combo (other than a pigalle T34)

Missing the rocker trim and nose emblem, which means rust and damage....but, you know fellas...that's what a $12K T34 looks like now.

I always liked the bumblebee color combo too.

February update:

Base paint is on and never ending preparation for final painting is on-going.

Faults I can see don't exist any more, but the body guy/painter can still find many (and demonstrated those with a patch of shiny paint, then I could see them too) so those are being fixed.

Currently the idea is to use original colours, bermuda (L288) and cobalt blue (L630) for the roof (possibly black (L41), as it was an option) as we managed to save original marine blue interior and those match to that.

Currently biggest missing part is the carpet set, but aluminium pieces around side window/door frame are quite bad and probably needs to be replaced/repaired somehow.

Most other parts are already painted and ready to assemble once a big pile of seals and trims arrive from Germany.

Also we have a wrong side mirror (from T3) but it has to do for now.

Some pics too:

Radio installation:

Working on several projects in an effort to get my '66 back on the road. Question about radios: By measurement, the holes for the radio shafts are 130mm on center. And the hole diameter is 10.5+mm. So.. none of the Sapphire radios I have are going to work since they are 132mm on center X 12.75mm diameter. Correct? Or am I missing something.

Contact Pedro, as he has a template for the carpet. He could also give you some tips on repairing the aluminum pieces. Keep in mind, that almost none of the trim is available new.

I went with SewFine for my carpet kit, and the tunnel piece was short.

Hello bobnotch!

A friend of mine has a complete used set, we can use that as a template once we find proper carpet. I got an offer from newtoncommercial (in UK) for a complete set, but no idea how good it is, haven't yet looked further than that.

Wasn't cheap but can't help that, even the material itself costs a lot and it's not a simple set, takes time to make.

We'll first try to find used trims and if that doesn't work, then we'll have to repair the old trim. Fortunately that spesific trim is mostly hidden between seals.

I managed to find door/window outer trim from www.vintagecarparts.de and those at least look very good, haven't tried to fit them into door yet.

Otherwise some progress, put front axle, brakes and overhauled gearbox into place and engine parts are in machine shop. No hurry now as this car won't be ready for this summer, better to fix those cars which are and continue in autumn.

There wasn't any schedule to begin with so the progress so far is very good.

New pictures also:

Some of the trim is now available as reproductions! If you need trim and yours is missing or can't be repaired, you must check out Paisit Chaisomboon's work. He's posting to the VW Razor's Edge Group on Facebook and his pricing is not too bad. Seat spears, rain gutter trims, rocker trims, door and q-window top trims, all in stainless. He ships from Thailand.

I've heard good things about Newton Commercial. As for Sewfine and carpeting, I live real close to them. I stopped by their shop and gave them some suggestions for improving their Type 34 carpet kits. Based on original carpeting I have and my own car, they will be modifying their patterns. Because I'm picky!

I have to agree with Greg, in that I've heard very good things about Newton Commercial and their carpets and other interior items. They actually take the time to make it right, and use quality materials.

Saying Greg is picky is sort of redundant. I mean, he even looks picky! Very Happy

Hoo, this is good news. I'll see what they have.

Well ... considering the cost I think customers can afford to be picky. I know I am: Bad parts hurt like a sore thumb after a while.

On the hand missing parts aren't any better ... hard problem when good ones aren't available and I can't find anyone who can make those.

I'm just a mechanic, body work (in cars like T34) I leave to pros.

Daily beater ... pfft, I can weld a patch somewhere and call it a day. But that's not quite enough for hobby cars.

Especially as around here they salt roads often, typically twice a week during winter, December to early March.

Try every time it snows, or it's cold enough for frost. They're still salting here, and it's the 2nd week of April. We're going to need a few heavy rains to wash it off the roads. It's been a cold winter this year.
