I finished machineing the case today (had to deck it .340 on one side and .350 on the other to get the cylinders heights all the same and for the cylinder bases to clear) and have 1 head finished porting. I'll do the other head tomorrow then it's off to OLLIES for remachined Porsche 911 guides, then to Geoff Hart Performance for a trick valve job and assembly.

Getting close to fitting the crank/rods and the cam to see how much I'll need to machine the rods to fit. Starting to move along pretty quick now.

This shit just seems to take forever

Finally back to work on the Speedwell Pepco 1397 engine.

Heads are at Geoff Hart Performance getting his trick 5 angle valve job and spring pressures set.

My WW crank being test fit. It has 5.325 chevy journal rods that we figured out how to work on a stock 36 hp rod journal. Custom ground by Web Camshafts WW cam blank.

If the cam didn't have so much lift the rods would have cleared it, but I'm not comfortable with .010 rod to lobe clearance, so apart it comes to clearance and rebalance the rods. The rods clear the case just fine.

Then another test and clearance check, one more scrub a dub dub on the case and get it glued together

Look how much shit still comes out of all the galleys, the block has all the plugs drilled and tapped, run through my parts washer machine, cleaned in a solvant tank, then ultrasonic cleaned. This is all the shit that was broken loose by the ultrasonic cleaner. I am going through all passages with a wire brush, then a fiber brush the a clean wipe ( I use gun cleaning supplies to do this)

VERY nice work on the rods and all! I won't ask how you exactly did that with bearings and such, but awesome to see the results!

I see you use inserts for the head studs?
Do your inserts have M10 thread on the outside like the original outside thread size of original 10mm headstuds?

thanks,
Walter

Ok, 8mm studs, but what outer thread size for the case inserts? ie did you use the old thread in the casing or drilled and tapped new thread of, say, 12mm?

Excellent! That was what I was thinking too: more thread support in these 50 year old magnesium cases by using 12mm timeserts.

I wouldn't use timeserts. I was original going to use 10mm timeserts but after talking to pople in the know, I said no no and went with OLLIES steel inserts

Shortblocked now. (Right before I stuck the case halves together). Got my deck height measured so I can order the custom pistons and will mock up the engine to build the intake for the Peppco

One serious Challenger Ronnie to the fastest 36hp speed ever recorded!
I will be there cheering you on and hopefully witnessing VW history in the making. It is long overdue.....................and you should be proud for taking on the challenge.

This project has been on hold for a few years now as I wait for SPEEDWELL to fix the Pepco copy they make. On a test spin it barely makes 1 lb of boost. Hopefully, before I die Ray will either fix it or send me the new rotors so I can fix it. a lot of money sitting around. The worse part is if I go turbo I will have to split the cases and have another cam ground. Steve from WebCamshafts figured out and did the grind for a supercharger and it won't work very well with a turbo! More money down the toilet.

Made a tattle-tale gauge like Bville Tom told me. Mine put out about 7 pounds of boost when I ran it on the salt last time I was out. Gained an extra 5mph right out of the box (installed while waiting in line to run). I don't think you will have any worries.
