|
|
I just changed my water pump and upon starting for the first time it's squeeling loudly. I revved the engine once to see if the noise would go away but it just got louder and I got a burning smell and a small puff of smoke from the pulley. Tried tightening and loosening the belt but no change. Reservoir is filled and cap off. Does this sound like a bad pump, or did I do something wrong? Pump is Hepu.

Checked that and it doesn't seem to be moving or noisy. I expected to start the engine and it would suck up all the antifreeze from the tank but nothing got sucked in. |

With the belt off can you spin the H2O pump pulley? |

Yes. It spins easily and has little to no play. |

The coolant needs to get hot enuf to open the thermostat before it will flow thru or get "sucked" into the rest of the system _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

That's what I figured but I thought it would flow in thatdiversion loop around the engine. Is there a step I'm missing bout priming the pump or something? |

Check the amount of axial thrust.
I had a van that started to squeal like that chubby, ruddy guy in the movie "Deliverance". I checked, then replaced the H2O Pump belts to no avail. The pump seemed rock solid with no leaks or redial slop. Then I noticed the extreme amount of axial movement.
When I yanked the pump it was obvious what was causing the loud squeal as I could plainly see that the pump impeller was milling away the engine case. As it turned out, the squeal was caused by an extreme case of "tool" chatter.

i took off the smaller hose on the top of the water pump and lots of antifreeze came out....so there is liquid in there. I started the engine with the belt off and it was quiet so it is definitely something with the pump or alternator. I can't see anything else scraping like engine tin or anything. maybe I put the pulley on backwards? |
