Headed out this afternoon on my first road trip with the square after the engine re-build.

Headed down around Tampa, FL. Should be about 1300 miles round trip.

If anyone sees a black square on the side of the road between NC and FL it will be me. Very Happy

EDIT: Here's the summary of the trip.

Car is 73 SB, 1904 engine with dell 40 carbs, running 70ish mph which is right at 3500 RPM with the 3.97 trans I have in the car.

Trip from NC to FL

Leg 1: 190 miles from NC to about Walterboro SC 6.74 gal of fuel 28.19mpg. Outside temps were hot as hell. Oil and head temps stayed within safe range.

Leg 2: Didn't record the mileage and fuel but did figure it up at about 27 mpg. Was running it a little harder this leg and it was loaded down pretty well. This was from SC to Jacksonville, FL.

Leg 3: 183.6 miles and 6.334gal for 28.98 mpg at 70ish again. This was from Jacksonville to the west side of Orlando.

Leg 4 : 200.5 miles and 7.413 gal of fuel for 27.04 mpg. This leg was about 1/2 and 1/2 highway and city. So this is more of the daily type driving.

Leg 5: Beginning of return trip. 194 miles and 7.025 gal of fuel for 27.63 mpg. The issue on this leg was getting stuck in traffic on both the west and east side of Orlando and then again at Daytona. Lots of idling and stop and go.

Leg 6: 210.2 miles and 7.046 gal of fuel for 29.83 mpg. This was the best leg and was all smooth sailing with no traffic or stops.

Leg 7: Final leg that put me 4 miles from home. 221.9 miles and 7.451 gal of fuel for 29.78 mpg. Not bad for coming back from flat lands to the hills of NC.

So with the city driving included I averaged 28.35 mpg and w/o it 28.56 mpg.

Not too bad for a stroker with big carbs in a square I don't think. Very Happy

Thanks guys... I'm thinking/hoping it will be a non-event and be fun outside of the heat and road noise. Very Happy

I just did the first 3000 mile oil change and valve adjustment and it looked good. The most any of the valves were out was maybe .001 and the oil looked good outside of a some aluminum flakes (I assume from the cam gear) in the oil filter when I cut it open.

I'm sure at about 2 hours in I'll realize how spoiled I am with A/C and good sound proofing in my truck. Smile

I couldn't imagine driving to Florida in this 100 degree heat with no A/C.
Good luck!

It's a whole different experience in your aircooled.
I can't stand new cars and the lack of driving smell, feel, and sound of the engine.

I was driving my buddies new GTI home for him and was sitting at the lights and couldn't tell whether the engine was running or not. Sick I stepped on the gas and the tach needle moved, but no change in engine sound.

Awesome mileage!!!!!!!! Keep us posted.

I'm going to take the notch all over the great state of Texas this weekend. This thread just inspired me to log the miles/mileage and make a cool thread about it. I'm going to use my GPS to get very accurate numbers too.

Why not go somewhere worthwhile? Once that fossil fuel is gone, it's gone. Texas? Hell, Detroit to Flint would be a nicer trip.

Just sayin. Laughing

Good point ninja....i verified the odometer against GPS and it was dead on. The Speedo was about 3mph off so I've been compensating.

So....third leg down. It was a short one due to female bladder issue. Very Happy

183.6 miles and 6.334gal for 28.98 (I'm calling it 29) mpg at 70ish again

That was from Jacksonville to Orlando all flat highway.

Oil temp stayed around 220 and head temps around 325.

Next couple of days will be just running around town then on the road again on Sat.

No issues so far outside of starter needing bumped once.

Heck ya!

Tonight I will start mine since I'll be taking 221 miles this evening. These things are meant to be driven.

I'll let the autotune program work it's magic, the goal tonight is to get 40+ mpg at 70mph cruise speeds. This weekend I'm be rolling with other VWs so 60-65, I'm hoping for 45+. Those numbers are awesome dude, you really got the tune dialed in Shocked

I posted up the summary of the trip in the first post.

We hit it hard and did about 630 miles home today so I didn't take the time to update on the fly.

No real issues. I had to bump the NEW auto starter 4 times. Seems that if I did over 200 miles in one clip it didn't want to work when I got fuel. Also messed up my LM2 cable. My dumb ass didn't tie it back up after playing with the jetting before I left. Sad

Other than that the car did great. It sure is nice to have the extra juice to be doing 70 and need to whip out and pass someone at 80 or 85. Very Happy

Hey Michael,

Yeah we could take a look and see what we can do. I don't "own" a VW shop. Very Happy

I have a small machine shop for doing engine machine work, I do line bore jobs and help some people out from time to with things. The machine work is what like best, but can do most anything. Very Happy

What's you current setup? If you don't have an 02 sensor bung installed I'll have to get a tail pipe sniffer for my LM2.

Either way though it would be cool to check your square out. I've seen a few pics and I like it. Very Happy

PM me your number and we can talk about coming out sometime if you want.

Dan
