I've been thinking a lot about my fuel tank drop. Now I'm wondering if the foil going to the right hand side of my cluster 1) temp gauge on top 2) clock 3) fuel gauge on bottom, may have something wrong with it as none of them work. I have a separate temp gauge with numbers.

Perhaps the fuel gauge doesn't work because of the foil (analogue clock doesn't work either). Is there any way I can test this thought out???????

I usually figure the Cluster Foil is a possibility for any electrical or engine problem...

ok, hypothetically say it is, what do I do about it? oh first how do you ascertain that it is the problem or contributing to the problem?

if you pull the cluster, be careful with the foil - it is delicate & so is that $%^*() connector

on the wiring diagram for your vehicle, what links all those devices you mentioned?

I'll look at the Bentley tomorrow and see if I can make sense of it. Bentley in van. There have been several different clusters in Scooby, no history on any of them.

Hey sunshine

I used an inexpensive pointy tip electrical tester to evaluate if the connector was getting power, from there it's elementary to determine if it's foil caused or otherwise.

As stated, be VERY careful around the connector or the foil. Delicate stuff.

If you have power at connector - check continuity of ground before deciding on foil. Ever done your grounds? That was my issue - one clean wire and I was good to go. Very Happy

Yep redid my two ground stars when I had the dash out. I have a continuity light so will poke gentley around with that. Have to take the top off to rewire in the tachometer anyway and I'm real good at getting the switches out now.

I've had only minor luck repairing foils, if only one problem, with a jumper wire. Plug area as stated is very touchey. As yours has been changes more than once u will have to determine if still orig or a later one is now there. Look in'Old Volks Home' web site, easy to follow directions how to switch wires in plug to use either one, NOT interchangeable without the wiring switch, this makes the part hunt some easier. I'm wanting to,this winter, take an old clister and try to replace foil with wires, one circuit at a time??, seems possible.

GoWesty just released "Cluster Harness Kit", which replaces the FOIL. I've been waiting for this product since their announcement in Aug/Sept 2013. Nice option for cracked and damaged instrument-cluster-foil...

Also, I saw people were posting pics of their cluster-gauge-icons. Here's one for a LLSD and MIL.
