Posted: Fri Jul 06, 2012 3:38 pm Post subject: Rolling Body Cart Plans and build for my '66 Bug |
|
|
So I have seen a few posts about building a rolling cart for a pan off restoration. I decided to go ahead and build one on my own out of two by fours. I took pictures along the way and made a plan diagram with a cut list and materials list. I figured this will help others looking to build something similiar.
With these plans I went with wood as it is cheaper and strong enough for this application. If you wish to use metal, these plans would work just as well. With this design you have enough clearance to roll your pan underneath for storage with the stick shift on (You may need to may adjustments as neccesary if your tires are larger or your garage/storage area is lower). This is for a stock 66 Bug setup.
The Plans, Material List, and Cut List
Raw Materials
Main Portions Cut
Started Assembly (I pre drilled each hole to prevent splitting of the wood)
Small supports in place squaring it up before screwing to bottom plate
Screwed to bottom plates
Measured in each side 1" and placed in between lines (Centered)
Both sides completed
Longer side supports in place
All supports in place
Each wheel screwed to each corner. I also used four small nail plates on the inside of each long support for added support.
Bug Body on Cart
In Garage and Pan rolling Underneath
Completed and stowed in the garage. I can simply roll the pan out or the body to work on each.
This car works well and will serve it's purpose. You can modify it as neccesary. Maybe bigger tires for different terrain or added support for durability. I hope this helps others with their projects.
This is my first Bug Restoration so I am new to all of this. |

Awesome! Thanks for posting this. I am just about to remove the body and will follow your design. Perfect for my situation. |

I'm building one just like this. Thanks so much for posting the blue prints.
I. Have a few questions... How tall does your body sit from the floor to the top of the body roof? And how much room does the cart clear the top of the fan shroud? Thanks _________________ Yet another person with a '66 project: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=526418 |

You might want to send him a pm, this thread is two years old, OP only has 3 posts and hasn't been on the Samba since February! _________________ BWD

Going off the specs he has listed in the drawings -- 24.5" vertical post, plus the thickness of the top and bottom rails (2x4s are actually about 1.5" thick), plus the height of the casters which appears to be about 4 inches gives us about 31.5" high for the body cart... add on roughly 48" or so for the body height gives us around 79.5" overall or just under 6 feet 8 inches. As for clearance for the fan shroud, the cart should be right about 30" from the floor to the bottom of the top rail (depends on how tall your casters are). _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Sweet, thanks. Those measurements were close to what I was coming up with by measuring it out roughly. My garage door opening is about 77" in height. I can probably make this work if I back the engine in first and don't completely cover the body over it. _________________ Yet another person with a '66 project: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=526418 |

Very nice job - just what we were looking for. Body coming back from painters in a few weeks and the chassis/engine is not done. Need to be able to "store" the body above the chassis as we work. Thanks for the detailed plans! _________________ 66 Beetle Sedan, restored 2014

This is great .. mainly because non-pressure treated 2x4's are so cheap. I would hate to spend money on pressure treated 4x4's or 6x6's or 2x2 steel tubing for something that when I was done with it was just going to get cut up for scrap.
I'm going to make a modified version of this for my Ghia when the time comes to pull the body off. I've got a couple of the $9.99 HF furniture dollies I could borrow the caster wheels off of. _________________ Chris

Just what I was searching for when I googled. I am currently making a restoration on a 1303 convertible and this is perfect! |

Mines a little beefier.. used 4X4's and big pneumatic tire casters for uneven grounds.
I prefered keeping it off the heater channels so if any work needed to be done to those.. the body cart wasnt in the way.
Plus it high enough to roll a full chassis out with the engine still attached.
Will fit in an average garage.

Just wanted to say thank you for putting this plan up, I built this dolly following your instructions and it came up a treat!
I originally had the car up with the fenders and everything still on the body. It handled the weight OK, but I could see it was stressing the frame, so I took them off.
Thanks again, the only small change I would make it to replace the small supports with longer ones to make the whole thing more rigid.
Cheers,
Vinny |

I'll be copying this too, except I'll have the pneumatic castors too for my gravel driveway, Thanks. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

Made a copy of the OP's cart with 2 pieces going across and 8" tires.
