So the 1600 I got in my old bug is actually a 1776! PO said it was a 1600 and it had a itty bitty 30/31 carb on it. Felt slow as hell so i thought it was for sure a 1600. Pulled the motor and it sat for 4 years. Tonight I pulled the heads and started scraping away the carbon. Saw that the pistons were stamped 90.43 and had the Mahle symbol. WooHoo! After clearing the grease and grime I saw these stamps...

Any idea what the 10-100 means? anyone know of a builder that stamps thier cases like this? I haven't seen any GEX stamps so I think I am in the clear. Any help would be appreciated.

GEX is too cheap to stamp their cases. they just put a sticker on it.

Lol...I thought the 10 100 might be an indication of the Cam or something. I guess I will pull the oil pump and see.

Who know what it is until you tear it down and see.
But the 10 could be .010 undersize on the crank and 100 meaning the cam grind.
Such as an Engle 100

Looks like splitting the case is coming up soon.
That is unless degreeing the cam doesn't answer any questions.

Pull it down....

I recently tore into a 1776 and on first inspection saw some 1.4 rockers. I thought cool!! this thing must be something.....WRONG.

the 1.4 rockers were to compensate for the almost flat cam!!!!! POS!!!

With Vw's you never know.
