ok so im trying to figure out what engine size and year. i have a tag in the place of the block numbers (h5722337) i removed it and there is nothing be hind it numbers leters VW logo nothing. what am i working with here

Over the (parts) counter, replacement engine case....

Biggest clue will be if its dual relief and maybe has AS 21 or AS 41 on sides below where pushrod tubes enter case...

Only way to actually tell "what" it is would be to break it down...

tag ..... your it !! like dale said, rip it appart, or if it runs fine, just a good going over(oil,filter,tuneup etc) and let it eat.when it's done eating time for surgery.
