Really different how each crossbar rises up to clear the roof. I wonder if they are tied together anywhere but on the ends.

I would imagine that it was just a ploy to make there ride look a bit newer. There are stories about car dealers cutting the divider out of a split window bug and making it in to an oval window bug just for that very purpose.

Did they dent the roof to use that rack? It would seem putting any weight at all on that rack would push it down onto the roof.

there are pictures of piles of split and oval cutouts for conversion to the big window in 58

Definitely looks like one of those East German copies or a Thai replica. That cat has some balls of steel.
