I can't tell if this is a barndoor or not it has some strange features. The front roof looks weird. The side view mirrors are mounted at the top of the door frame or the roof. Aftermarket?

Yes, large front door handle indents, later bumper, bullet signals

I'm calling ribbed bumper Kombi but not a Barndoor

What are the bumper uprights from?

Fish, that looks like one of the author streets where they come down to Rosecrans by the old Liberty Station?

BarryL, yup. My guess is Voltaire or Udall at Rosecrans.

The Dove Blue in this photo looks super blue to me, more "Dove Blue" than original paint Buses I've seen, if you know what I mean.

Interesting that the hubcap logos appear to be Dove Blue too since it looks to me like it has the mid-57-61 dollar taillights but the hubcaps in body color stopped in 9/1956
the blue looks like that because it was almost a new bus in the pic Laughing Laughing ,i think it looks perfect in color.and the camera might of gave it some tint aswel!

Is there some weird perspective thing going on in that picture? Each time I look at it, the wheels and the driver look too big. I don't think there's anything fake there, but it's weird - like the bus seems just a little bit too short, front to back.

This is a still from a YouTube video from Queensland (Australia) state archives.

Youtube video link is here:

The Registration Plate starts with a "Q", that means it was a state owned splitty!

Early '70's photos. This couple sold this Bus in '77. I bought it in '94, ran into them driving the Bus in '97, they still had the tent and these photos

Now we know where Westfalia got their inspiration for the later Westy curtains.

I fear this may get answered with a meme, but here goes anyway... Who is Manny?

Oh my...just look at her...her whole life ahead of her. By now she may even be a great grandmother.

The year is 1969, fall. She's been dating the 23 Window guy for some time now. The bus guy talked his mother into sewing curtains so they could "have a place to change swim clothes" but there has been some boy/girl petting in the back of the Samba that she encouraged. He is more interested in surf than anything she could offer. 23 and the Charger guy have been bros since childhood. Charger Guy's parents just bought him the car for his senior year in high school. Samba and Charger are out ripping up sweet peelers as a gnarly swell hit during the night. They both recently joined the clan of shortboard punkass surf rats.

Shortboards have recently taken over as the hot stick so longboarders are just old knee-paddeling longboard nose-riders. Chicks aren't welcome in the water as they are mostly a distraction with the way they sit on the board and when they fall (which is on every wave) they surface with tan-lines showing where there bikinis tugged down. They just get in the way.

They don't know it yet but Surfergirl has designs on Charger Boy. She wants to dump 23. Yes, it was fun tossing Frisbee and tying the bandana on his Yellow Lab but she wants more. Charger promised he'd let her use his old longboard but so far he hasn't come in to get her.

The photo is taken by a passerby that she taught to use her new Kodak Starmite she got for her birthday. She poses against the Charger while envisioning her new life of catching scratch, peeling out and pulling brodies. Yes she was taught that the slower smaller engine of the 23 Dude will help prolong dinosaur oil depletion but she doesn't really understand and wants her back slammed against the bucket seat of the Charger with the flimsy lapbelt laying loose as they tear from light to light laughing with the rush of adrenaline.

I'd like to know too!! I can't imagine back in the day someone repainting a Wolfsburg 23W bus PGSG, adding the correct dual pinstripes and the green stripe in the nose emblem. I would definitely like to hear peoples opinions on this one.
