Hello everybody,

I am planning on doing the necessary metal work on my '67 sliding deluxe. Have to repair lower INNER part of B an C pillars. Are they the same than normal split windows or should I take bay window ones?

I have the same question for lower part of the sliding door panel. Bay one would fit?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Do you think I should change the whole lower rocker panel as well or just patch the front hole? (I don't know if it is the correct name for the long thin panel under door) This one is the same than non-sliding door busses?

Thank you very much.

PS: Just for information; work necessary is
1- lower inner part of both A pillars, passenger's side B and C pillars
2- cabine floor complete
3- bulkhead +++
4- lower part of sliding door
5- 1 pop-out
6- Surface rust fixing and seals changing
7- Polish
Later: change sunroof.

Let's see if this summer I will beat the road with a shinny split!

Have a nice week end

Hi Pau,

almost everything you mention is unique to a slider. Exept the bulkhead and sunroof of course. The pop-out window of the sliding door is one of the rarest.

You can adapt rocker and inner door sheet metal from the bay window. B and c pillar need to be adapted from the existing hinge door replacements. The floor in the sliding door area is completely different. But this part usually stays intact, as this is pretty massively built. So cut it away (or best, leave it in place) and weld it to the new floor. Inner rocker needs to be custom made unless you find a NOS. There are some out there. Sliding rail is most probably intact, too.

Looking at your bus (you sent me many pics - thanks again) I believe you can safe most of the original substance, which I believe it’s worth. Even the paint is mainly original. Try to safe it please and blend with new where needed. Your bus looks really great!

Good luck! Samba sliders are special, even in Europe. But sliding door replacements are a challenge...

Contact me if you need some advice. I’ve gone through it.

PS: and now we know: Samba sliders have only one rocker trim or no trim when double slider!

As you can see, my slider was pretty rotten and badly rapaired. But hey, it kept it alive and it used to be my daily driver...

Wow Tizian, vielen Dank!

you did a titan job! Mine is not that rusty. I don't have to replace so many things. Sliding rail looks solid, floor needs some patches but we will manage with standard replacement sections. Middle seat plate part is crusty because of a wooden floor installed during years of family trips, but ALL belly panels are magnificent. I assume rockers as well, but this will be a last moment evidence or surprise.

The person doing the metal job is not in VW but he did a very nice and serious work on my first horror VW experience. He fixed bad repairs done by "specialists". So I trust him but I am in charge of parts finding (Your other thread learned me I don't have to seek for a passenger lower trim Wink Wink ). One think we talked about a lot is the time gain (so money gain) of finding replace pieces instead of forming them.

When he saw pillars, he said they should be changed in order to have solidity. When I see id'r 's thread (that I love):

I think my inner part hole is a little smaller than that one, and outer part (skin?) is not touched. So, should I patch it? Adapt a hinge door replacement ? Thanks to your tips I won't look for younger model pillars.

OK for door repair and luckily rusted pop-out is not the door one.

Saying this, I am going to bed. Today's rain aborted our garage building. Let's see if tomorrow we can finish blocks to start woodwork soon and bring a bus home!

Stay safe and thank you again!

Egun on.

Today I noticed that front door sliding window seals where recovered with some tissue. It is weird. It is really torn and falling apart but it looks like if it was covering top part but not lower rails.

Is it normal, doctor?

Yes. That is factory. They have a kind of felt cloth to cut down on rattling and wind whistling.

Thank you BarryL.

I didn't realise before and I don't remember my first deluxe having them (but then I remember it was very poorly restored by "specialists"). I will look if SO23 has the same. Do reproduction seals have this tissue?

Other thing:

I took appart lateral bulkhead panels. They where strongly ribbeted (I don't know if that's correct in English) and there was too much glue. Do you see three black stripes? Anti-vibration/sound, like the ones over motor compartement. Original? Why only three?
Interesting to see how long the liner of the bulkhead top part was. It went behind lateral panels where it was strongly glued with them. On both sides of this part, lateral wall liner was entering and was glued as well. It was difficult to take it off without collateral damages.

You can see remaining aeropapyrus from spare tire panels (strongly glued, of course!)...

Have a nice day.

All the places I've shopped have it.

You have an amazing amount of original fuzzys remaining.

Original yes. Three did the job? Maybe others could chime in if they've seen more?

Hallo Tizian, wie geht’s Dir?

I have a question (not only for you): how did you manage to put middle seat plates at the right place? I mean: the shop is replacing floors, they say autocraft floors don’t fit the patterns they took from original floors (remember I have a 67 sliding door 21 windows). Did you find any issue?

I will go and check tomorrow. I will try to take some pictures; is there a special point of view that would help you to detect a problem?

Thank you.

Danke, gut!

I tu?

I have the green panels installed. Trial fit the bench to the locking plates and see if they line-up with the recesses in the floor panel. If not, well then you'll have to rework the recesses, or maybe modify the plates (which is much easier). Double check against the cutouts of you floormat, too.

The ones on the green panels do not line-up perfectly either, but I'm able to fasten the seatlegs. So no rework was done.
