I was looking at the little tag on the base on the rear bed/seat of an early 67 SO-42 westy today, then compared it to the tag I pulled off the squashed green late '67 SO-42 westy. There was a little over 3,000 difference between the two Fabrik-Nrs. Pretty neat.
here's a tag on my '65:
here's a tag on a piece in the classifieds:
Someone may already have more info than me, but I am guessing that the SO-42 Fabrik-Numbers are just for SO-42s (not SO-44s etc) and they started at the beginning of SO-42 production.
Then I looked at a tag I have pulled off a dead SO-67 (early Bay) Westy bed, and it was ~13,800....about 2,000 higher than the late 67 tag... so are those sequential with the SO-42s, or did they just make SO MANY early bay westys? I dunno, just thought the whole thing was interesting.
Does anyone have an SO-42 registry?

I think the SO42 numbers run up thru the production year and then restart with the next year...... Doesn't Michael Steinke have a registry? _________________ Scott |

I think this is correct Clara. SO-44s have their own tags, and apparently don't go any higher than 500 or so, according to this post:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=211115&highlight=dormobile
Here is my SO-44 tag:

This same question was asked about SO-44s in the above link and Claus started an impromptu registry on his cool site here:

These are the two tags that got me thinking:
^^^ 3rd January 1967 buildt SO-42 VIN 237 079 xxx
^^^ 26th May bus VIN 237 130 679
which means 3061 SO-42s buildt between the beginning of january and end of May (~5 months)
3061 SO-42s /50,000 buses = 6% of buses were SO-42s! ???!!! _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Seems to follow.
6/3/66: 6022
1/3/67: 8877
So that's 2855 Westies in 7 months, minus some down time between the '66 and '67 model years. |

If it helps, my SO-42 has production date 06 April 1967 and the Westfalia Fabrik Nr is 10,100.
I can't post up pictures at the moment, but will e-mail to someone to post up if you like!!

Wow! No posts since 2007.
Is there a better source out there nowadays than this thread for Westfalia SO-42 fabrik number tags and the month/year they were produced? You'd think there might be a "registry".
I have four Westfalia SO-42 fabrik tags minus their interiors here (#4958, #10031, #10147 and #12770) and I'm kinda curious to nail down the month/year that the tag and it's interior was produced. I have a Jan 20, 1967 Bus (originally a Sundial Camper conversion when new), and I guess that if it would have been a Westy SO-42 Campmobile that it should have like a #9000-ish fabrik number plate.
Perhaps more of you out there might comment here with your known vehicle production date and SO-42 fabrik number to add to the data. We love photos too!

This thread probably has the most information about this stuff:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=579032&highlight=westy+production
Would be tough to pin down the month based on the Fabrik-Nr. as I've seen them throw older kits in newer buses (probably because they built them ahead of time). Xavi had an SO42 registry up for a while but its not really updated.
That 12770 tag is pretty late, probably close to the end of production. Post a pic of that tag as that's one of the latest I've seen.
From the thread mentioned above:
Based on those you could probably say SO-42 production was roughly (figures edited based on additional detail from Clara):
1965: Fabrik Nr. 1-2200 (about 2200 produced)
1966: Fabrik Nr. 2200-6900 (about 4700 produced)
1967: Fabrik Nr. 6900-12700 (about 5800 produced)
SO-42 total production of around 12,700. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches

Is the number really #118091 ? Is it five or six digits? And out of curiosity and for more data points, could you tell us the production date of your 1967 SO-42 with whatever fabrik # it is?
"srfndoc" - I'll take and post up photos of my tags tommorrow if I don't get sent out on a flight assignment.

To help narrow it down for you my 1/3/67 production SO42 has Fabrik-Nr. 8872 so your 9000-ish guess sounds about right. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |
