|
|
I am planning a trip with the kids to see the seattle space needle next week. We are staying in Harris beach in OR. for a few days and then trekking up to WA where we are staying at Kalaloch for several days along with some ideas that I found in these threads.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=480799
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=446261
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=424230
Now for the question- what to do in Portland and the Seattle area? Since you folks have been so helpful with camping ideas I thought that you could help with touristy stuff as well.
We will be in Portlandia for 2 non consecutive days and the kids came up with
The OR zoo
Vodoo Donut
The art museum
The grotto (dunno what it is)
Stepping stone restaurant
We will be wandering around the seattle area for over a week and the kids found
Burke Museum
Seattle museum of flight
Space needle- *reason for trip*
Original starbucks(I don't drink coffee but it would be cool for them to say that they saw it)
Fremont troll
Experience music project
Hat n' boots
Archie Mcphee
Aquarium
Pioneer square
Woodland park zoo
Red Mill burger place
Is there anything on the list that I should skip or something that I should put in? The kids are both teenagers so that might help with suggestions.
Thanks |

I'd definitely do the Museum of Flight, you can spend hours in it.
Also, if your kids are into aviation/space, you can do a tour of the Boeing factory at Everett to see how the 747/767/777/787 are made (check http://www.boeing.com/commercial/tours/index.html to make reservations - required) _________________ 87 Syncro Westy EJ25 ("Tardis")

If you're in Portland on a Sat/Sun, def. go to Saturday market under the burnside bridge. I don't feel the Grotto is a must see unless you're either really religious or like dirt jumping bmx. Oaks Park could be fun for the kids... think permanent carnival. Forest park is fun to explore (The zoo is part of the complex). You could also just explore the downtown area, maybe make a game of it to try to see every fountain (Can actually take all day)... _________________ - '81 Fed Vanagon L |

I'd recommend going up to the Boeing plant in Everett WA, about 1/2 hour north of downtown Seattle and taking the tour. Largest building in the world and really an experience for anyone.
From downtown Seattle put some extra coins in the parking meter (park down near the ferry terminal) and take the family on the ferry to Bremerton. Don't get off in Bremerton, but stay on for the round trip. Take a lunch along and enjoy the trip. Round trip for 1/2 the price and well worth the time spent.
While at Kalaloch be sure to visit the Ho River area in Olympic National park. |

On the near (Seattle) side of Olympic National Park is the Hurricane Ridge. We skipped it on our trip around the peninsula but had a chance to go back while visiting friends near Bremerton and were very glad we did.
We were startled to learn we had cell reception in the Hoh rain forest when my wife got a call from a client. |

I work down the street from Stepping Stone. If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth stopping by. The food is decent but I wouldn't travel too far out of the way for it though. The Zoo would be fun too. My boy always likes it. He's 8 though.
Let us know when you're going to be here and maybe we can get a Lab outing put together. If not, we'll see you at Mogfest, right? _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

Well it's not Seattle, but if you are coming up from OR and plan on being anywhere near Mt. St. Helens, it is WELL worth a visit. I've lived here for 5 1/2 years now and is easily the most interesting and fascinating place we have visited. |

+1 on this, but hope for clear weather so you get the full benefit of the view. Day of our visit it was clear all the way up to the visitor center but no higher. Pity. Guess we need to go back. |

X2 on the Family GTG...It would be nice to see you and the family Mario.
Let me also add a couple other potential areas of interest:
Portland Childrens Museum
OMSI, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry
Both just fine for Teenagers as well....
Jabbah's winery. Let him know you are coming and he will hook you up
I recommend doing the winery tour in Dundee after your trip to the
Wings N Waves Indoor Waterpark on the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum property
This is only about 12 miles away from Waldersee farms as well, so, you may wish to send him an email and have dinner with them as well.
Other day tripper ideas:
Hood River
Multmnomah Falls is on the way and lots of scenic byways.
Oregon Japanese Garden in Washington Park
Chinese Garden in Old Town, NW PDX, very close to Voodoo Donut, which is overrated, but a must see Saturday market on the waterfront on Sat/Sun's.
carterzest's house for dinner? LMK when you are rolling through brother!
Of course, much of the above suggestions assume the fact that you will be rolling a rental or have a vehicle of some sort. If you are Sans Transpo, I can shoot out a whole new list of recommends _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

drive the road inland all the way to the town of Hood River! the scenery is great, the town is charming and you can watch windsurfers and kiters do the latest freestyle trick, I used to be one of them before the kids (B.K.). Plenty of hiking in the area, waterfalls, etc...
you can also take the ferry to Vancouver Island for a two-day escape...did that too, turned it into a 5-day glory _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Ride the new Ferris wheel down on the waterfront here in Seattle. Enclosed AC gondolas and a breathtaking view. Red mill is a must as well as paseos Cuban sandwiches in Fremont. Underground Seattle tour is pretty amazing also. Jim Hendrix and Bruce lee graves are cool to see. _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia Syncro Hightop

Hey there,
I saw this post and figured I'd chime in. If your coming up the coast you should stop at cape arago there is much to see. Cape perpetua is a must do in my book its a great get out of the car and walk around spot. Look up "thors well" on the internets its right there and a great spot to oooh and ahhh and shoot photos. The dunes are cool if you like 4wheelin or dune buggy rentals. Devils punchbowl is a great tide pool area and open cavern that you could check out at low tides. For me most of the costal towns are full of people, salt water taffy and smelly candle shops(I generally steer clear). Lincoln city has a bunch of glass blowers that make cool glass balls and other art, maybe keep the kids away from glassblowers lest they get crunchy . Pacific city is a jewel small town great surf and a good brewery and a cool beach cliff hike. Cape lookout a bit farther north is a nice hike with great views. North of there may be out of your way but astoria is cool too.
If your into air planes and space stuff the evergreen aviation museum is pretty great, home of the spruce goose and semi expensive admission prices. Its located in Mcminnville (where I curently live), and I would be happy to have you guys for dinner or at Argyle winery where I work for a tour! I could probably find a grassy patch for you guys to stay or you could stay the night if were in town. Portland is a diffrent beast full of all sorts of fun depending on your definition. Feel free to ask for more info!
