transmission swap question... diesel

My 82 westy tranny kicked the bucket. Theres a guy who has a tranny from a rabbit caddy diesel.. 4 speed. Will that work for my vanagon westy?

Mine was a 4 speed manual also.

Sorry, the only direct swap is a tranny from another 82 diesel. 83 5 speed will not work.

No other vanagon tranny will work if your engine is the stock 1.6 NA

The good new is no body else's wants such a tranny so they should be cheep.

The aircooled vanagon transmission will also work but you will need to swap the bellhousing and shorten or swap the input shaft.

The gear ratio in the aircooled tranny is also higher so you will lose some performance but it will be quieter on the highway.

I think the aircooled ratios will be too much for the poor little 1.6na

It works well with the 1.9na, TD and TDi, but with the 1.6na you will spend most of the time in third.
